Teacher, Outreach Services (Orientation and Mobility / Visual Impairments), LSVI Louisiana Special School District (LSVI)

is a state model employer for people with disabilities. The district is experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters, and educators of the Deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired children.

Two full‑time positions (9½ months, 7½ hours per day) will be offered for the 2025‑2026 school year. Travel will be required.

Responsibilities

Provide orientation & mobility and visual impairment services to students and families, implementing the LSDVI instructional philosophy.

Travel throughout Louisiana to conduct outreach services and support instructional activities at the LSVI campus.

Administer pre‑ and post‑tests, evaluate student progress, and provide input on placement decisions.

Create and maintain lesson plans, instructional materials, and student records in accordance with the Expanded Core Curriculum.

Apply orientation and mobility and other low‑vision aids and assistive technology.

Maintain accurate records of contacts, instructional strategies, appointments, expenses, and confidential information.

Demonstrate strong professional ethics, reliability, punctuality, and collaboration with school personnel and community agencies.

Participate in professional growth planning and ongoing evaluation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a related field.

Louisiana Ancillary Certification in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) or Visual Impairments, and ACVREP or NOMC certification in O&M is required; if certified only in Visual Impairments, must obtain O&M certification.

Knowledge of orientation and mobility skills, low‑vision aids, and the Expanded Core Curriculum for Visually Impaired students.

Current driver’s license and ability to be certified through the State Driver Safety Program.

Reliable transportation; frequent travel of >100 miles/day expected.

Program Management Responsibilities

Implement LSDVI instructional philosophy, programs, and curricula.

Apply special education statutes and regulations at state and federal levels.

Demonstrate competence with child‑centered decision making for students with visual impairments.

Maintain meticulous records and confidentiality as required by law.

Build positive relationships with students, families, and community partners.

Programmatic Responsibilities

Travel across Louisiana for outreach services.

Assist with school events (e.g., White Cane Day, Braille Challenge) at the LSVI campus.

Manage assessments, including Functional Vision, Learning Media, and Expanded Core Curriculum.

Collaborate with instructional staff to design and implement curriculum aligned with ECC.

Professional Conduct

Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and professional ethics.

Follow established communication channels and accept suggestions for improvement.

Use time effectively and maintain appropriate student‑adult relationships.

Develop and implement a professional growth plan as directed.

Maintain proficiency in Braille, orientation and mobility, adaptive technology, and low‑vision aids.
