Performs responsible and skilled communications work receiving and transmitting over police radio, intercom, and telephone. Duties involve knowledge of the functions of the division with actions governed by policy or law. Inattention, carelessness, or lack of prudence may cause embarrassment to the City or unnecessarily expose police personnel to dangerous or life threatening situations. Employee has routine contact with other employees and outside public contact. Duties are sedentary in nature, performed under normal working conditions, with more than normal stress, and require concentrated attention to prevent errors. Employee may be required to work on a shift basis, overtime, and on weekends.

Employee may be required to work on a shift basis, overtime, and on weekends.

Employee works under general supervision, referring questionable incidents or requests to the supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF JOB FUNCTIONS

Receives operational calls and messages by police radio, telephone, and/or computer; provides requested information, or transmits messages or information to mobile units; dispatches additional police units on trouble calls as directed; relays messages between mobile units, portable units, and other City departments; operates an electronic message recorder; maintains an operational log, monitors other City department radio frequencies, and takes indicated action in an emergency; prepares and maintains necessary reports, records, and files; performs extensive operation at computer terminals.

Receives emergency calls transferred through 911 operators.

Dispatches emergency personnel and equipment in accordance with departmental policy or as directed.

Enters, updates, and receives information, emergency and non-emergency, using the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer.

Assists in maintaining appropriate radio files; maintains radio, telephone and computer contact with other agencies and/or public safety support organizations.

Assists in preparation and maintenance of records and reports.

Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OPEN ENTRY

Experience:

One year of continuous experience (full-time or equivalent hours); and employed within the last eighteen months as a law enforcement radio dispatcher utilizing a Computer Aided Dispatch System.

Note:

Within one year of appointment, employees in this classification must have the ability to type a minimum of 200 keystrokes (40 words) per minute.

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of streets and important buildings.

Knowledge of the principles and techniques used in operating police radio, teletype, and telephone equipment.

Knowledge of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations governing the operation of radio communications.

Ability to exercise sound judgment under conditions of emergency, confusion, and high stress.

Ability to express ideas and information in both oral and written form.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, and remember names and details of incidents.

Ability to operate a computer, and aptitude for clerical work.

Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.

Good diction, hearing and a clear speaking voice.
