Job Description The Department of Communication at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, invites applications for an Instructor of Communication and Director of Speech who will begin in Fall Semester 2026. We seek a dedicated teacher who will be an active and collegial faculty member in the Department of Communication. This person will serve as a program administrator, teacher, and coach with expertise in Individual Events / Forensics (e.g. events at the NFA or NIET tournament) to substantially expand a Competitive Speech Program to complement a longstanding Policy Debate Program and a very successful semi-annual Speech Showcase. The successful candidate will communicate respectfully and proactively with students, faculty colleagues, and university administrators about the value of collegiate Individual Events.
Job Duties Administrative duties include budget management, report writing, travel logistics, student recruitment, high school outreach, tournament and event hosting, scholarship management, and public relations. Coaching duties include helping students prepare for competition in individual events (e.g. selecting topics/literature, editing drafts/helping to cut pieces), practices, travel to tournaments, judging commitments, etc. The position includes a full-time teaching load of 12 hours per semester, typically split into two regular undergraduate courses per semester and two courses that are connected to the Speech team’s practice. Candidates should expect to teach undergraduate courses in Public Speaking (introductory and advanced), Interpersonal & Small Group Communication, and/or other classes as needed by the department, including General Education. Other teaching opportunities are available depending on willingness and experience.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Communication (or a related discipline) by the time of appointment
At least two years of experience coaching NFA or NIET -style individual events
Ability to travel 6‑8 times a year
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of college‑level teaching experience
Experience with managing a budget and travel logistics
Tournament or event‑hosting experience
Record of personal and/or coaching competitive excellence in NFA / NIET -style Individual Events
Demonstrated commitment to serving a wide variety of students

Physical Requirements of this position Light work. Exerting up to 20 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls exerting forces greater than that for sedentary work.
Visual Acuity Requirements Includes color, depth perception, and field of vision. Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading.
Conditions The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: None. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
