Job Description

Media & News Member of Esports and Co-Curricular Innovation

The University of Oklahoma Division of Student Affairs is looking for undergraduate students who are located in the Norman area to serve as media and news specialists. Media specialists are responsible for script writing, conceptualizing, filming, and editing videos. News specialists are responsible for researching, writing, interviewing, and editing articles.

Program Culture

You are responsible for creating quality videos or articles for OU Esports and Co-Curricular Innovation. This includes good planning and time management skills, communication, and effort. Specialists should also respect all members of their team and the subjects of their works.

Availability & Communication

You should maintain regular communication with your supervisor, the Media and News Coordinator. This includes attending regularly scheduled meetings and staying attentive and responsive via communication networks such as Discord and email.

Media

The Media Team is responsible for all videos that go out on OU Esports and Co-Curricular Innovation’s social media. Being a Media Specialist will require knowledge of the video making process, including filming and editing. Media made should reflect the inclusive nature of OU Esports.

News

The News Team is responsible for articles that go out on the Sooner Esports website. As a News Specialist, you are expected to adhere to professional journalism standards. This includes conducting ethical research and interviews for articles and standing by the AP and OU Esports Style Guides while writing and editing. Articles should reflect the inclusive nature of OU Esports.

Collaboration

The abilities of our department include producing live coverage of matches, putting on community events, featuring our programs and teams in articles and videos, and promoting both gaming and esports culture. Our community department holds the keys to enable the ability to make all those things easier through building fan engagement, utilizing our spaces, and ensuring we’re allowing our supporters and future community members the ability to have a touchpoint into one of OU’s largest single topic communities.

  • Attending regular weekly meetings
  • Attentiveness to OU Esports events and overall esport or gaming news
  • Conducting research and interviews for content
  • Writing, filming, and editing videos for OU Esports social media
  • Researching, writing, and editing for OU Esports website
  • Photography and videography skills

Job Requirements

Required Education

Must be currently enrolled in the Fall term as a student at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status. Applicants must be located in the Norman or OKC Metropolitan area to be considered for employment.

  • Must attach Fall 2025 class schedule
  • Must be in the OU Esports & Co-Curricular Innovation department

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • As a media specialist, showcasing abilities in videography, script writing, editing, and photography are preferred
  • As a news specialist, demonstrating abilities in news writing, interviewing, researching, and article editing are preferred
  • Both specialists require good time management, organization, and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and work well with others as well as subjects for videos and articles
  • Discord and email communication knowledge is a must for this position
  • Knowledge and understanding of Esports, the latest gaming technology, and trends
  • A high level of personal and professional integrity at all times

  • Driver's License

Advertised Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move, engage in repetitive motions including movements of the hands, wrists, or fingers, and communicate effectively including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maneuver and handle videography equipment including cameras, green screens, and tripods

Department Preferences

  • Skills in Adobe products, Google Docs, and Canva preferred
  • Previous experience in writing or video making
  • Previous experience in video game related organizations and jobs
  • Previous experience with working with others
