Assistant Professor of Music - Black American Music
The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University seeks an assistant professor of music (tenure‑track) with expertise in the history and practice of Black American music. The position starts July 1, 2026.
Responsibilities
- Teach college‑level courses, including Jazz History, New Orleans Music, and other Black American music history, theory, or performance courses.
- Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students.
- Conduct promising research and/or creative output in the field, including performance portfolios.
- Foster strong connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.
- Engage in departmental and university service activities.
Qualities and Qualifications
- Experience and demonstrated success in classroom teaching at the college or university level.
- Promising research and/or creative output in the field.
- Commitment to contributing to scholarship on Black American music, including Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R‑n‑B, Soul, Funk, Hip‑Hop, and music of the African diaspora.
- Commitment to fostering strong connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.
- Tenure‑track candidate capable of a national‑level scholarship and/or creative performance informed by research.
Teaching Load
2/2 teaching load of courses for music majors and general population students (non‑musicians).
Tenure
This is a tenure‑track position at an R1 research institution. Successful tenure depends on national‑recognized scholarship and/or performance informed by research.
