Position Overview
The Studio Foundations area in the Art Department is looking to grow its adjunct pool to staff future courses (Fall 2025 and beyond). We seek instructors to teach observational drawing, figure drawing, 2D design, and 3D design.
Essential Duties
Observational Drawing (Drawing 1)
The fundamentals of freehand drawing, representation of objects, nature forms, problems of analysis, response, perception, composition, compositional strategies and technical standards are presented. Students develop an understanding of contour drawing, indication of surface texture, form, tone and effective compositional planning. Various media are used.
Figure Drawing (Drawing 2)
The prerequisite for this course is Drawing I, a course which combines the careful observation and analysis of individual forms and objects along with the comprehensive integration of composition, light, space, tonality, perspective and more. Drawing II must build on this momentum. In this course the figure is the featured subject, however, the figure does not represent the intellectual and visual focus of this course. This course is intended to emphasize the employment of the figure in a total compositional context. It must be stressed that while students are expanding their knowledge of anatomy, which will then increase the accuracy with which they render the human form, their ultimate drawing goal will be to create a coherent image. Objective observation of the figure should serve the composition, serve the drawing, reflecting the goals and motivations of drawing as learned in the second half of the Drawing I class. Critical and accurate observation must be spread among the figure, the props, the lighting, and the space/context. In other words we should expect students to make drawings which utilize the figure, but which are not exclusively of the figure at the sacrifice of composition.
2D Design (Design 1)
After providing full awareness of the visual elements (line, value, color, value, pattern/texture) and all of their variables, this course emphasizes creating 2-d visual structures that employ the various compositional strategies. Within this context, the students will also be developing problem-solving sills, while learning to think visually, as opposed to literally. Also, the relevance of design strategies to a variety of fine and applied arts solutions, along with the connections of design to everyday experience should be stressed.
3D Design (Design 2)
A major focus will be the unique problems presented by sequential, logical evolutions of primarily asymmetrical forms in real space. This spatial evolution should be based mainly on relative dimensional changes, and only secondarily on surface treatments. The role that process, selection, and the manipulation of media has in the development of form will also be covered. The context of all these studies will be the further evolution of the problem solving strategies first developed in Design I.

- Be able to teach Freshman-level Foundation Studio courses that are centered on the Bauhaus model.
- M.F.A. in Studio Art, be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and professional experience, must understand the role of foundations courses in an art curriculum.
- College teaching experience, active exhibition history, knowledge in the overlapping, interdisciplinary topics as they relate to art foundations courses.
