Description

SMU's Division of Journalism seeks candidates for a teaching position as a media executive-in-residence to begin in August 2026. The successful candidate will join the division at an exciting period of expansion and innovation with our two core majors - Journalism and Fashion Media - and specializations in Sports Journalism and Business Journalism. Our new colleague will be an established media professional experienced in storytelling in video and audio across current and emerging platforms with the ability to be an engaged teacher and mentor, to develop internships and media partnerships, and to assist with strengthening the division's curricular offerings.

We are seeking an experienced newsroom leader or media executive with a strong record of editorial decision-making and innovative storytelling. Ideal candidates will have served as a former editor, senior producer, bureau chief, newsroom director, or executive at a major news organization, a documentary or investigative storytelling unit, or a leading podcast, streaming, or multimedia journalism platform. The media executive-in-residence will teach in their area of professional strength, mentor students as they develop their reporting voices, and help build connections to news organizations locally and nationally. We are especially interested in candidates who bring a collaborative spirit, a commitment to ethical and inclusive storytelling, a strong understanding and track record of producing innovative and creative media for current and emerging platforms, including social media, and a willingness to share their professional networks as part of their work with students.

Applicants with broadcast experience are especially encouraged to apply, as are those with a background in sports.

The typical teaching load for this position includes departmental service, student media advising, and the development of professional opportunities for students. The candidate likely will be the adviser to SMU-TV and would also be expected to assist with video and audio production on the division's other student media platforms: The Daily Campus and SMU Look. Teaching assignments may entail Video & Audio Production, Broadcast I & II, Fashion & Video, Podcasting, Student Media Leadership, or other courses within the division's curriculum and the candidate's expertise.

This is a Professional and Teaching faculty position. While it is not eligible for tenure, it has a three-tier promotion path. Professional and Teaching faculty's primary responsibility is teaching, though courses may be substituted by significant service roles. Additional service may include academic advising, recruiting, student mentoring, and other departmental service as needed, and will be negotiated based on teaching load and departmental needs. Creative work and research are not expected, though they may be rewarded. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's in journalism or closely related field and at least 5 years of professional experience at a reputable media organization;

• Extensive knowledge of the current and emerging media landscape;

• Ability to produce content for multiple platforms, including social media;
