The Community Music Center of Boston is an arts and education nonprofit with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences. We are seeking motivated, student‑centered group music instructors in general music, sound production, and bilingual music education (Spanish) to provide instruction at our community partner sites.
Role Overview
The ideal candidate will be able to teach students in a classroom‑based setting, have an interest in public school music education, and employ an inclusive and culturally responsive teaching style. The position supports CMCB’s three curricular pillars—Musical Artistry, Social‑Emotional Development, Cultural Inclusion—while participating in Student Pathways. This opportunity is suitable for candidates with demonstrated teaching experience who are looking for community, growth, and a compensation structure that includes paid administrative time and professional development. Additional teaching opportunities are available for teachers who can play and teach multiple instruments. Status: Regular, part‑time hourly, exempt. Start Date: Immediately. Schedule: In‑person, 3–5 hours per week, Monday–Friday within regular public school hours (8:00 AM–2:00 PM) with room for growth during and after school hours.
Responsibilities
- Teach students according to curricular guidelines.
- Develop instructional materials and lesson plans.
- Prepare students for performance events and opportunities.
- Complete attendance in registration software accurately and timely.
- Maintain open and regular communication with site contacts to support educational progress.
- Attend department meetings and the annual all‑faculty meetings as scheduled.
- Participate in department events, recitals, and concerts.
- Actively respond to pertinent emails from all CMCB staff in a timely manner.
Qualifications
- Essential: Bachelor's degree in music performance/education or equivalent experience; 2–3 years teaching experience in classroom group settings (public school).
- Preferred: Sound production expertise, preferred for other genres; bilingual music education—fluency in Spanish.
- Expertise in recording technologies, sound production, and audio recording software (e.g., GarageBand, Logic, ProTools).
- Strong time management and classroom management skills.
- Ability to adapt to individual needs of a diverse student population and provide constructive feedback.
- Comfortable working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values.
- Interest in culturally responsive teaching, creative youth development—student voice/agency, and social and emotional learning (SEL).
- Regular reflection on practice, openness to feedback, and a commitment to continuous learning and development.
- Clear communication skills, both oral and written, when interacting with students, families, and colleagues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Docs, Forms, Sheets).
