CERTIFIED - 911 Communications Officer Call Taker (Temporary No Benefits)

The City of Roanoke is seeking a

VA STATE CERTIFIED and experienced

911 Communications Officer to work as a part-time call taker. The preferred candidate must be certified as a Basic Dispatcher, VCIN (Virginia Criminal Information Network) Operator and possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required, and a clean criminal record is essential.

Responsibilities

Receive incoming emergency and non‑emergency calls for fire, rescue, law enforcement, EMS and HazMat.

Operate computer‑aided dispatch systems and the Virginia Criminal Network.

Provide accurate, timely and professional information to callers, including taking messages, routing calls and giving medical advice when appropriate.

Monitor weather radio and alert personnel to potential inclement conditions.

Initiate follow‑up calls to persons at the request of officers and call wrecker companies as directed.

Handle administrative telephone duties and forward calls as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Dispatch Certification through Virginia DCJS.

VCIN (Virginia Criminal Information Network) Operator certification.

NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) knowledge.

High school diploma or GED with continuing education in computer classes.

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
