Designer/Drafter 2 | Salary: $53,700 – $82,500
Position within the Tooling Design Team of the Engineering and Product Support Group (PT-5) in the Pit Technologies Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Designer/Drafter 3 | Salary: $64,700 – $101,400 As above but with higher proficiency requirements.
What You Will Do Design tooling and equipment for all aspects of the pit production flowsheet, primarily through CAD modeling and drafting. Work closely with product engineering, design, and fabrication personnel in a dynamic, collaborative environment. Provide timely, novel tooling designs suitable for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. Work independently to determine technical objectives and complete assignments without established procedures, while contributing to continuous process improvement initiatives.
What You Need – Minimum Job Requirements
Experience in computer‑aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) tools, producing models, drawings, layouts, and sketches.
Understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles, standards, symbols, notes, GD&T.
Fundamental knowledge of ASME, ANSI, AWS, and related industry standards.
Fundamental understanding of engineering, design, drafting concepts for mechanical, electro/mechanical, or electrical disciplines.
Knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly, and fielding of components and mechanisms.
Familiarity with component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment.
Awareness of machine shop equipment (mill, lathe, drill press, welder, inspection equipment).
Fundamental understanding of engineering materials suitability for design and manufacture.
Ability to work on diverse teams, collaborating on novel designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from senior technicians.
For Designer/Drafter 3: intermediate level knowledge and proficiency in the above skills.
Education and Experience Designer/Drafter 2:
High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Designer/Drafter 3:
Associate’s Degree in Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
ASME GDTP Technologist Certification (ASME Y14.5‑2009) – higher level only.
Active DOE “Q” clearance (or equivalent).

Position Commitment 1 year continuous service is required to remain eligible for future Lab jobs. Regular appointment employees must serve the required continuous service period; otherwise, they may only apply with documented approval of their Division Leader.
Legal and Security Requirements Citizenship in the United States is required for Q clearance. Access to classified matter requires federal clearance under DOE Order 142.3A and NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Applicants from specific nations are prohibited from accessing facilities.
