Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Technical Writer to support a county-wide documentation initiative aimed at updating and standardizing approximately 300 internal job aids. This project focuses on applying new document templates, ensuring clear and concise content, and verifying accessibility compliance (ADA/Section 508).
The ideal candidate is passionate about simplifying technical content, ensuring accessibility, and collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to produce clean, user-friendly documentation.

You'll be joining the Training & Communications Team within Jefferson County's Business Innovation & Technology department. The team's mission is to create accessible, high-quality technical resources that empower county staff to effectively use internal systems and tools.

This project focuses on applying new document templates, ensuring clear and concise content, and verifying accessibility compliance (ADA/Section 508).
The ideal candidate is passionate about simplifying technical content, ensuring accessibility, and collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to produce clean, user-friendly documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply existing content into standardized Microsoft Word templates
- Edit and rewrite job aids for clarity, consistency, and adherence to plain language standards
- Conduct accessibility checks (e.g., alt text, heading hierarchy, color contrast)
- Collaborate with SMEs to clarify and revise content
- Finalize documents for SharePoint publishing
- Track and report progress throughout the project lifecycle
- Proven experience in writing/editing technical or instructional content
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and document formatting
- Knowledge of digital accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG 2.1)
- Experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro for PDF accessibility (Accessibility Checker, Tags Panel, Reading Order)
- Excellent attention to detail and time management
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Familiarity with screen readers or assistive technology
- Experience updating SOPs, user guides, or training content
- Understanding of plain language best practices
- Experience with SharePoint or document publishing workflows
- Familiarity with CommonLook or advanced PDF remediation tools
- Background in training, adult learning, or IT education environments
