SMSI, LLC is seeking multiple experienced Designers / Drafters Level 1 & 2 to support Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering (PIE) Division projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The PIE Division of LANL delivers high‑quality engineering services to the plutonium national security mission by providing a diverse set of engineering resources to support the modernization of the Technical Area (TA)-55 infrastructure and capabilities.
Responsibilities
As Designer / Drafter will be part of a design team assessing and maintaining and upgrading the facility systems at LANL.
Provide support to more experienced engineering personnel by performing detailed two‑dimensional (2D), three‑dimensional (3D) and facility design assignments at the LANL.
Assigned to a discipline position within the LANL engineering Division in an entry‑level and higher‑level technical capacity.
Complete assigned tasks under routine supervision and technical directions.
Required Skills / Abilities - Designer Drafter Level 1
Minimum of 1-2 years of related experience, depending on the level for the position.
Demonstrated skills to produce 2D and 3D facility designs and issue drawings.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) experience is preferred.
Skills to evaluate, identify, and document existing deficiencies.
Ability to produce simple calculations and design recommendations.
Capability to organize project documentation using various means (e.g., spreadsheets, databases) and submit for engineering review and approval.
Capability with MS Office Suite and ability/willingness to learn new software packages.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface with clients, contractors, and consultants on a day‑to‑day basis.
Self‑starter with ability to work in a team environment.
Candidates must able to work on site at LANL.
U.S. Citizenship is required.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
Required Skills / Abilities - Designer / Drafter Level 2
Detail knowledge and experience in understanding engineering design.
Familiar with industry standards such as ASME, ASTM, AWS, IEEE, and computer‑aided design (CAD) to produce models, drawings, layouts, or engineering concepts.
Fundamental knowledge of AutoDesk / AutoCAD.
Responsible for the general design drawing packages.
Resolves engineering design packages issued by the facility reviews and collaborates with the engineers, stakeholders on design, fabrication, and assembly and test.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and contract language.
Education Requirements
Level 1: High school diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience.
Level 2: High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education related to the standards including industry and/or DOE/LANL standards.
