Position Details Title: Art and Art History – Assistant Professor – Ceramics/3D Design.

Classification: Faculty Full Time (.75‑1.0 FTE) – Rank: Assistant.

Department: Art & Art History.

Employment: Full‑time, 9‑month contract beginning August 2026. Workload: 24 hours (18 teaching, 6 research/creative activity).

Job Description The Department of Art & Art History invites applications for a tenure‑track, full‑time Assistant Professor of Studio Art focusing on Ceramics and 3D Design. The role involves teaching studio courses, contributing to the general education curriculum, advising, mentoring, and conducting research/creative activity. The position supports a NASAD‑accredited, BA‑granting fine‑arts program at a Christian liberal arts college.

Key responsibilities include:

Teaching courses in ceramics and 3D design for majors and non‑majors.

Developing an incremental plan to expand 3D design tools and technologies.

Contributing to First‑Year Seminars and the senior capstone course on an on‑call basis.

Providing leadership and service within the department, including advising students, office hours, portfolio reviews, and assessments.

Maintaining a vibrant studio practice and active exhibition record.

Facilities The department’s 3,200‑square‑foot ceramic studio is equipped with a slab press, clay and glaze mixing rooms, several electric and natural gas kilns, and an outdoor Raku kiln. Faculty studio offices are available in the DePree Art Center. The Kruizenga Museum’s permanent collection includes a global ceramic collection available for teaching and study.

Qualifications

Active studio practice with a vibrant exhibition record.

Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics or another three‑dimensional art discipline.

Demonstrated ability to teach studio art in an undergraduate Christian Liberal Arts College context.

Engagement with global perspectives that embrace diversity and inclusion through studio practice, teaching, or service.

Proficiency in ceramic hand‑building and wheel techniques, mold making and casting, glaze formulation, 3D design principles, material handling (e.g., clay, wire, cardboard, wood), and the use of tools and equipment related to ceramics and sculpture, including basic kiln operation and safety procedures.

Proficiency in digital design and fabrication.

Physical Demands The position requires prolonged sitting or standing, use of office machinery, occasional lifting of items over 10 pounds, frequent movement between spaces, and effective communication. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified candidates with disabilities.
