WSP is seeking an experienced and highly motivated

Technical Director, Traffic Engineering

to join our team in New York. This role can be based in any of the following NY offices:

Valhalla, NYC, Buffalo, or Troy .

The ideal candidate is an experienced Traffic Engineer who is innovative, results-oriented, and team-focused. The Technical Director, Traffic Engineering will bring strong leadership skills to help grow our business, oversee project delivery and staff development, and provide technical assistance and guidance in engineering and design for our local, state, and regional clients. Our ideal candidate has a proven track record of successfully delivering projects from initiation through operations and maintenance, with a strong focus on client satisfaction and technical excellence. This position will primarily support projects in New York. Some project-related travel may be required.

Your Impact

Support the delivery and execution of project scope, objectives, and requirements, ensuring close collaboration and alignment with clients and stakeholders. Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and issues. Ensure project deliverables meet high-quality standards and specified requirements. Implement rigorous quality review processes, manage version controls, and track comments and resolutions. Prepare and present comprehensive project progress statuses using reporting tools and dashboards. Monitor and meet defined performance metrics, tracking budget, time, scope, and communication details to ensure projects meet schedule and client expectations.

Stay current with emerging technologies, industry best practices, and relevant standards.

Lead and direct multi-disciplinary project teams, including internal staff, sub-consultants, contractors, and vendors. Foster a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability.

Manage internal groups or outside vendors to identify, plan, negotiate contracts, deliver and monitor performance to client specifications.

Coordinate with various internal and external partners, including cross-discipline and functional teams, government agencies (i.e., DOTs), and other stakeholders.

Comfortably present complex technical and project information to diverse audiences, including executives, client teams, and public forums.

Contribute to and potentially lead the development of technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgeting for projected work.

Assist in building and growing the firm's Traffic Engineering, Safety and Intelligent Transportation Systems practice across New York State.

Foster technical development and mentoring of staff.

Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’ s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology, preferred, or equivalent years of experience.

12+ years of progressive experience in traffic, ITS, & safety planning, analysis, and design.

Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York, or another state and able to obtain reciprocity in New York State within 6 months of hire. PTOE certification (highly preferred).

Proven experience managing complex projects with budgets, schedules, and technical requirements.

Proven experience with NYSDOT, MTA, and other regional agencies.

Develop new project opportunities, manage client relationships, and prepare and manage proposal submissions.

Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.

Exceptional communication abilities including written, verbal, and public speaking.

Demonstrated success in proposal writing, client presentations, and strategic project delivery.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Passion for innovation, quality, and financial performance.

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’ s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Engineering.

Active engagement in relevant industry organizations.

Project experience - Traffic operations and safety, ATSPM, signal design, signal timing, NYSDOT experience, Interstate Reconstruction, Environmental Impact Statements.

Expertise in traffic engineering principles, practices, NYSDOT project delivery process, Traffic Signal Design, Signage, pavement markings, Maco, Meso and Micro-simulation modeling.

Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $139,800 - $249,150

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may offer additional benefits and compensation, depending on circumstances and the type of work being performed not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
