This position is located at NASA’s Langley Research Center and will support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE). The role reports directly to the Maintenance and Reliability Engineer Manager. All work will be performed with high quality, professionalism, and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
Job Title MR&E Technical Writer
Responsibilities
Review OEM manuals, drawings, engineering specifications, and maintenance records to ensure accuracy and completeness of written documents.
Study blueprints, sketches, and other technical information to integrate and delineate technology operating procedures, production sequences, and details.
Convert engineering details, troubleshooting notes, and inspection findings into formal documents such as work instructions, SOPs, preventive maintenance tasks, job plans, and reliability reports.
Draft reliability summaries, equipment histories, failure notes, and technical updates based on data from engineering and maintenance teams.
Maintain version control, document libraries, revision histories, and controlled file structures.
Standardize formatting and templates to ensure consistency across MR&E documentation.
May select photographs, drawings, and charts to illustrate material.
May assist in laying out material for publication.
Work with Engineers to ensure root cause analysis documentation is clear, complete, and properly archived.
Help identify gaps, outdated documents, and needed revisions during documentation audits.
Coordinate document reviews, signatures, approvals, and releases with relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship required.
Associate’s degree (AS) in an appropriate discipline from an accredited college or university preferred.
Two (2) to four (4) years of progressive experience in technical writing, documentation, or related field; additional relevant education may substitute for progressive experience.
Must be able to complete and maintain an approved NASA background investigation.
Valid driver’s license required.
Skills
Good written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and office equipment.
Self‑motivated with great attention to detail.
Ability to learn and work independently.
Work Environment
Office environment – 95%.
Travel between facilities and during test operations – 10%.
Exposure to high noise levels, hazardous propellants, chemicals, and industrial facilities – 5%.
Must be able to walk, stand, bend, twist, sit, climb, crawl, and lift up to 35 lb.
Location: Virginia Beach, VA.
Salary Range: $16.00 – $20.50 per hour.
