ABOUT THE SCHOOL The Communications Department is housed in the Gwen Ifill School of Media, Humanities and Social Sciences, which was launched in 2018 to carry on the legacy of pioneering Black woman journalist Gwen Ifill. The School focuses on intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and generosity of spirit, guiding students through civic engagement and humanistic inquiry.

ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS The department offers rigorous paths in Journalism, Design, Integrated Media, Public Relations, and Marketing. Curriculum centers on critical inquiry, intersectional frameworks, and audience analysis, emphasizing visual, written, spoken, and multimodal skills while fostering responsibility, strategy, and adaptation for civic engagement.

JOB SUMMARY The Communications Department invites applications for a full‑time non‑tenure stream contract appointment beginning January 2026. We seek a dynamic educator with a strong foundation in strategic communication, public relations, and integrated marketing communications. Candidates whose work emphasizes advocacy, organizing for social change, and intersectional or transnational perspectives are especially valued. A background in global, environmental, political, or health communications is strongly encouraged.

The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in strategic communication, public relations, integrated marketing communications, advertising, media writing, content creation, and strategy. Opportunities exist to teach in Studio 5, the student‑run communications agency that serves as a capstone, and to develop curricula at both program levels. The ideal scholar demonstrates applied communications theory, a commitment to social justice, and integrative learning that prepares students for professional and civic pursuits.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teach seven on‑ground undergraduate and synchronous online graduate courses each year.

Participate in course design and ongoing creation and revision of curricula in consultation with faculty and program leadership.

Participate in ongoing department curricular planning and periodic program review.

Serve the department, school, and university through committee work and student engagement efforts.

Serve as a major advisor for students, tracking their course plans and progress toward the degree.

Engage in the communications profession.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Communications or related discipline; MA/MFA with relevant industry experience.

Demonstrated record of excellence in university‑level teaching.

Commitment to collaboration across the department, school, and university.

Prior experience and continued engagement in the professional practice of strategic communications.
