Summary About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the McElveen Library Shaw AFB. Responsibilities Monitors all technical service operations and resolves and deviations. Trains new staff in technical services procedures and processes. Evaluates technical service policies, procedures and processes and recommends improvements. Perform descriptive cataloging which may involve extensive searching or long descriptions by modifying existing records to match the items on hand. Uses automated cataloging resources such as OCL and MARCIVE to obtain and modify catalog records for new library materials in a variety of formats. Downloads cataloging data for materials into the on-line catalog system to make the records accessible to library users. Ensures catalog records are accurate and current. Prepares a variety of formats of library materials, including online resources, for use and/or access by library customers; performs technically challenging tasks to incorporate records into shared systems. Analyzes and selects appropriate technical options to meet delivery needs of users and requirements of local systems. Devises and adapts various search strategies within the library's holdings and utilizes on-line databases to provide reference service to customers. Answers more in-depth or difficult questions that require the use of outside sources. Prepares and updates subject bibliographies. Reports purchasing/delivery discrepancies to Senior Technician. Recommends titles for possible inclusion in the collection. Assists in providing ready reference services to library customers. Refers difficult reference questions to the Senior Technician or Librarian. Shelves books, magazines, and other library materials according to the various systems used in libraries, and ensures all materials are reshelved in correct order. Performs routine clerical tasks. Assists at the circulation desk as needed. Ability to represent the library at meetings when needed. Uses varied and advanced functions of work processing and spreadsheet software to prepare, format, modify, edit and print a variety of letters, memos, reports, and other documents. Receives and transmits electronic mail and attachments. Independently carries out assignments. Consults with consortium libraries and peers to establish and implement joint records and data systems. Assists users in circulation and reference transactions. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifying Experience: A college degree or some college is desirable. Have one (1) year specialized experience in a library that provided specific knowledge of library rules, policies, and procedures for circulation and technical service. Be able to read, write, speak and communicate effectively in English. Have computer experience or training in computer applications such as Windows, Word, Excel, Access and the Internet. Have typing experience. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, twisting the neck, and reaching; pushing loaded book trucks; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. Be physically lift boxes of up to 40 pounds. Be able to reach up to 72 inches with or without the assistance of a step stool. Be able to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. Possess skill in dealing with the public. Specific visual requirement: Be able to read 10 pt Times new Roman type from floor level to 72 inches. Successful completion of a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) is required. Possess skill in working with peers and with the public. Work involved long periods of sitting and computer use. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying. Additional Information Individual must fully meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
