Title: Director of Music & Organist (exempt)
Status: ¾ time (30 hours)
Position Summary
To plan, administer, and supervise the music ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
All Covenant employees function as representatives of a Christian community blessed by the grace of God. Our employees are called to minister to others, just as are the members of our congregation. Accountability
The Director of Music & Organist is accountable to the Head(s) of Staff and works closely with the Worship Ministry Team and other Covenant ministries as needed.
Qualifications
Educational: Graduate degree in music preferred. Bachelor’s degree in music required. Prefer at least three years in leadership position of church music programs.
Professional: Proficient in organ and conducting choral music. Prefer experience with handbell choirs.

Ability to inspire, lead, and teach adults, children, and youth to glorify God through vocal and/or instrumental music.
Good organizational skills and capability to see tasks through to completion.
Good communication skills in working with all ages.
Ability to conduct professional activities with truthfulness, honesty and integrity, and maintain sensitivity in matters of a personal or confidential nature.
Responsibilities
Serve as primary musician for all Sunday worship services, funerals or memorial services, weddings, and special worship services and lead these services by providing well-rehearsed music.
Provide choral and/or instrumental music for all worship services to include regular Sunday services, seasonal services (i.e. Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Christmas), and other special services. This includes the scheduling of special music when the choirs are not participating in the worship services.
Direct and accompany the adult choir during weekly rehearsals, preparing them for their weekly musical offerings and holding extra rehearsals as necessary in preparation for special services.
Direct and manage handbell choir(s).
Provide support and leadership for children and youth music ministry offerings.
Provide ongoing recruitment for membership for all music programs.
Develop the music portion of the budget and submit it to the Worship Ministry Team for approval. Purchase all music and supplies, hire outside musicians as necessary. Limit expenditures so as not to exceed budgeted amounts without prior approval from the Worship Ministry Team and Sustainability Ministry Team.
Coordinate repair and maintenance of the 31-rank Zimmer pipe organ, carillon and control unit, pianos, and handbells.
Attend staff meetings and Worship Ministry Team meetings.
Maintain the music library including choral music, bell music, and the library database, as well as necessary copyright licenses. Provide detailed copyright information for the paper bulletin and for the livestream video on a weekly basis and provide reporting to copyright licensing agencies.
Work with youth as needed in the preparation of Youth Sunday. With the help of volunteers, assist in the development of a music program to fit the needs of the youth.
Coordinate substitute organists when needed.
Be available to perform other duties or tasks that may be assigned.
Participate in continuing education opportunities, in consultation with the Head of Staff.
Seek opportunities to make community connections and help to maintain Covenant’s visibility in and around the Augusta area.
Other
The Director of Music and Organist is permitted to teach music lessons using the church’s facilities and instruments.
Relationships
The Director of Music and Organist will work with the Co-Pastor(s), office staff, the choir(s), the Worship Ministry Team, and volunteers.
Annual Review
Annual reviews will be conducted in accordance with the personnel policy. The Sustainability Ministry Team will annually review the adequacy of compensation prior to budget preparation.
