The DC Public Schools Office of Operations (OoO) is comprised of the Strategic School Operations, Food and Nutrition Services, School Security, and Facilities Planning and Design divisions. OoO is responsible for guiding the operations and functions for all 117 schools within the District. Our mission is to ensure DCPS Stakeholders – principals, teachers, students, and central services teams – have the operational systems, facilities, and support to be excellent.

The Facilities division is comprised of two main teams: Modernizations and Small Capital Projects. The Manager supports the overall Facilities Planning and Design approach for both teams.

The Manager, Facilities Planning and Design will be responsible for overseeing and reviewing the development of architectural designs from Concept Design through construction. The Manager, Facilities Planning and Design will work with the Deputy Chief, Facilities Planning and Design to approve school modernization and stabilization designs and ensure the DCPS standards are met. The Facilities Planning and Design team is committed to delivering buildings that meet the needs of the students, teachers, and staff. The Manager, Facilities Planning and Design will be responsible for thinking creatively to ensure our modernization designs and small capital improvements keep up with the latest instructional methods.

The Manager, Facilities Planning and Design will report to the Deputy Chief, Facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides oversight and review of school modernization designs and small capital improvement design from Concept Designs through construction.

Provides support to the Directors of Small Capital Projects and Modernizations and in the approval of designs for modernization and small capital projects with oversight from the Deputy Chief, Facilities Planning and Design.

Participates in the project finishes review and approval process.

Represents DCPS in the FF&E review and approval for the school modernization projects, along with Specialists.

Participates and coordinates support in the project list and project closeout process with the Department of General Services (DGS). Ensures close coordination with DGS, Design-Builder, and the project Architects.

Develops procedures for project review to ensure that DCPS needs are met in the design.

Assists the Directors with general School Improvement Team (SIT) oversight, as directed by the Deputy Chief.

Supports division-wide and site-specific education specification revisions.

Collaborates with DGS on the development of an updated Design Guideline document, which will outline acceptable materials and products for school projects.

Participates in the review of and selection of new furniture vendors.

Coordinates with the DCPS Office of Teaching and Learning to ensure that designs meet the needs of the latest instructional models; ongoing evaluations of national trends and best practices will be required.

Participates in the presentation of designs to the community and other stakeholders, where needed.

Manages up to four staff members and provides guidance and oversight on all aspects of the modernization and stabilization processes including school and community engagement.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four to six years of related work experience.

Master's degree preferred.

Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.

Licensed Architect preferred.

Experience with local government projects preferred.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a variety of audiences.
