Role Concept Artist
Primary responsibilities include creating pre-production art assets and visual guides for 3D teams and outsourcing partners. The Concept Artist establishes the overall vision of the universe, works with the Lead Concept Artist to create imagery that communicates the visual experience, and helps blueprint all aspects of the game for content authoring.
Typical Day
Purpose of the Team: Concept Art team, creating pre-production art assets and visual guides for 3D teams and outsourcing partners.
Candidate Requirements
Disqualifiers: Candidates unwilling to work onsite, lack of portfolio, or experience limited to non-relevant genres (e.g., Pixar-style games).
Best vs. Average: Ideal resumes show strong draftsman skills, experience in FPS/sci‑fi genres, solid fundamentals (composition, lighting, design), and tool familiarity (Unreal, Blender, Photoshop).
Responsibilities
Work closely with the Art Director, Lead Concept Artist and other Artists to define the look of the project, from global ‘broad stroke vision’ and mood to its specific, individual pieces.
Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the game universe and the constraints of the technology.
Be proactive about seeking feedback and communication with the Art Director and other relevant departments.
Create orthographic (construction) drawings for environments, props, characters, vehicles and weapons.
Assist the Art Director, Lead Concept Artist and other Senior Concept Artists in providing studio feedback during the course of production.
Participate in regular team meetings.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or diploma with an emphasis on Art.
Shipped at least one AAA game title.
An outstanding grasp of human anatomy, animal anatomy, industrial, and architectural design coupled with strong traditional art fundamentals.
Exceptional mastery of either Photoshop or Painter.
Ability to work collaboratively – must be open to direction and able to embrace change.
Salary Range $100,000‑$133,000 Annually. Factors that may affect pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
