Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

New Student & Family Programs (NSFP) is responsible for transitioning over 4,200 first‑year students and over 800 transfer students into the UNC community, while establishing relationships with over 20,000 undergraduate families.

Position Summary

The Associate Director designs and delivers year‑round education and leadership training programs for 70+ NSFP student leaders and serves as the staff liaison to the Carolina Parents Council and New Student Convocation. The role develops and co‑manages communications efforts and supervises a full‑time Coordinator for Family Programming & Communications.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent).

At least 1 year of relevant experience in student support functions if a bachelor’s degree is substituted.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Ability to work effectively in teams and independently in a fast‑paced environment.

Demonstrated understanding of belonging and leadership to promote respect among student and family populations.

Knowledge of the needs of first‑year and transfer students and families and how to program, serve, and communicate with these groups.

Proven ability to prioritize work, adapt to changing priorities, and manage multiple tasks.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and technical proficiency for developing content for print, web, and social media.

Willingness to work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Minimum five years of full‑time professional experience post‑degree in higher education or related field.

Previous experience developing or implementing programs for family members of college students and/or student orientation or transition programs.

Experience with college student leadership development and program implementation.

Working knowledge of fundraising processes including an understanding of the annual giving cycle.

Strong writing, editing, and proofreading experience.

Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills.
