Job Overview
Digital Graphic Designer at the Senate Sergeant at Arms (SAA) - 90% onsite, collaborating with a team in Printing, Graphics, and Direct Mail (PGDM).
Job Description Shape impactful visual experiences across the United States Senate by creating innovative digital media, dynamic interactive content, and visually compelling print publications. Collaborate with designers, develop accessible and inclusive materials, and modernize legacy documents to meet today’s design and accessibility standards.
Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties
Coordinate and manage the creation of digital media projects including social media ads, interactive PDFs, email designs, animated GIFs, and fillable forms.
Create e‑Publications with interactive maps, video, hyperlinks, scrolling frames, page buttons, pop‑ups, and other interactivity.
Ensure publishing activities follow digital accessibility best practices and WCAG 2.0 guidelines; perform user accessibility testing for digital media publications.
Develop UI/UX for web and mobile document services and applications.
Design a variety of print projects and handle graphic production with responsive design systems.
Serve as a backup to the section lead in absence and perform other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications Required Education High School Diploma / GED.
Required Work Experience
At least 2–3 years of graphic design experience.
Required Special Knowledge and Skills
Proficiency assessment may be conducted.
In‑depth understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG, ARIA) and assistive technology (screen readers, magnifiers, voice recognition).
Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver.
Knowledge of printing and graphics design principles, composition, typesetting, and publication layouts.
Knowledge of accessibility legislation: Section 508, European Accessibility Act.
Knowledge of HTML/CSS/JavaScript and compliance with WCAG and Section 508.
Effective relationship building with Senate staff and ability to resolve customer problems.
Meeting strict deadlines and availability for sudden recalls or emergency events.
Desired Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and proven record of delivering visually compelling designs.
Expertise in print and digital media from concept to final execution.
Proficient in HTML, ARIA, CSS; seamless integration into web platforms.
Strong knowledge of Section 508 compliance and accessibility.
Collaborative ability to enhance user experience across digital products.
Deep understanding of WCAG 2.2 and their application.
Proficiency in accessibility testing tools such as WAVE, JAWS, NVDA, MadeToTag.
Working Conditions
Onsite presence required during Senate sessions; availability during shutdowns, inclement weather, holidays, late nights, overnight, and weekends.
Position is considered excepted during government furloughs.
Operate a computer in a stationary position; occasional light lifting of items
Presence during meetings and briefings, either in person or virtually.
