National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader HDR is a leader in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. We are looking for a national Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader who will directly report to corresponding Area Operations Leadership and have a dashed reporting line up to our national Substation Business Class Lead. This position will focus on the protection and control design matters within the power delivery substation business class.

Responsibilities

Duties also include:

Drive development and implementation of a quality program within our business class to foster physical design technical growth for our junior engineers.

Drive development and implementation of a physical design training and career development program for our national business class.

Quarterly training/meetings with EITs and junior engineers across the practice to discuss overall issues, success, project experience, and lessons learned.

Technical career path encouragement.

Creates and maintains the technical practices, standards and expectations to accomplish market sector visions, and solve client problems. Supports the technical development within the Business Class that drives marketing and commercial success. Possesses and maintains a world‑class understanding of Physical Design issues and current professional-practice approaches; and has the ability to package HDR design expertise as client solutions within the appropriate "consulting" context. This includes the development and application of technical tools, standards and techniques to enhance service quality and efficiency. Ensures that technical staff are aware of and monitoring emerging technologies.

Develop a network of technical experts/SME’s to help drive technical goals for our national practice/business class.

Actively supports the open communication of current/projected production needs through the Business Class organization; collaborates with BCL to influence staffing and expertise levels.

Supports the professional development of staff and the development of production tools: Best Practices, Technical Policies & Procedures, Papers & Presentations, Professional Associates credentialing, recognition of technical achievement, Practice Group activities, and Information Management and Automation Tools.

Leads proposal technical reviews (i.e. Blue Team Reviews).

Participates in root cause analysis and helps provide solutions for challenging project issues.

Participates and may lead PARR’s (Project Approach Resource Review).

Achieves a 70% to 75% utilization goal by supporting projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Active participant in ongoing technical working groups (both internally and externally).

Subject Matter Expert or strong knowledge of a variety of physical/outdoor design concepts, including but not limited to:

Substation Arrangements

Constructability and design criteria

Bus Span Calculations

AC and DC sizing and loading

Raceway design

Cable design

Material selection

BOM development

Grounding Design

Lightning Protection Design

Substation Lighting Design

Major Substation Equipment Specification development

Experience designing and/or reviewing General Arrangements, Cross‑sectional Arrangements, Substation clearance checks, Grounding packages, Lightning protection studies (Rolling Sphere and Fixed Angle), Lighting studies, Raceway systems, Cable design, Rigid and Strain bus design, Insulator selection, Arrester selection, etc…

Experience mentoring and coordinating Physical design workshare with multiple area offices.

Strong knowledge of best practices, industry standards, and codes related to Substation Outdoor/Physical Design.

General knowledge of substation design software such as CDEGS, WinIGS, etc.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.

10 years of experience.

Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.

Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience.

Experienced in development and management of diverse teams.

Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full‑time regular positions. National average $142,240.00 to $203,200.00)
