Overview The Learning Center’s (LC) Communication Center is led by the Communication Center Coordinator, a full‑time, 10‑month Administrative & Professional (A&P) position at James Madison University. Responsibilities include teaching, supervising student employees, developing and delivering training, monitoring budgets and payroll, overseeing outreach efforts, and conducting research, assessment, and strategic planning. The Coordinator reports to the LC’s Associate Director, partners with other LC faculty and staff, and maintains affiliate status in an academic department such as the School of Communication Studies. The role is integral to the Learning Centers’ mission of providing tutoring, coaching, study sessions, consultations, and workshops across six programs that support student academic success.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating peer educators, including graduate assistants.
Teach two courses per year in an affiliate academic department and provide Communication Center consultations.
Maintain, evaluate, and improve existing programs and conduct strategic planning informed by assessment.
Recruit and retain students from a variety of populations to better serve all students’ success.
Collaborate with the administrative team to determine budgetary priorities.
Oversee payroll processes, scheduling, and other administrative tasks.
Engage in outreach efforts and partnerships with other units on campus.
Conduct appropriate scholarly and professional development activities.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in communication, rhetoric, education, or a closely related field.
Expertise in communication studies.
Interest or experience in learning centers.
Demonstrated commitment to cultivating a welcoming learning environment.
Teaching and/or tutoring experience.
Strong understanding of communication center scholarship and praxis.
Demonstrated success in collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in communication, rhetoric, education, or a closely related field.
Strong understanding and practical application of diverse learning experiences.
Experience working within a learning center, communication center, or other academic support program.
Strong assessment and/or program evaluation experience.
Expertise in learning science.
Expertise in artificial intelligence, assistive technologies, or other technologies used for accessibility or universal design.
Tutor training experience, including ability to design and deliver a curriculum and assess learning.
Expertise in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
