Responsibilities

Drive development and implementation of a quality program within our substation business class to foster physical‑design technical growth for junior engineers.

Develop and implement a physical‑design training and career‑development program for the national business class.

Conduct quarterly training and meetings with entry‑level engineers (EITs) and junior engineers to discuss overall issues, project experience and lessons learned.

Encourage technical career paths for staff.

Create and maintain the technical practices, standards and expectations to accomplish market‑sector visions and solve client problems, and to position HDR’s design expertise within the appropriate consulting context.

Develop and apply technical tools, standards and techniques to enhance service quality and efficiency; ensure staff monitor emerging technologies.

Build a network of technical experts/SMEs to drive technical goals for the national practice.

Support open communication of production needs through the business‑class organization, collaborating with the Sub‑Business Class Lead to influence staffing and expertise levels.

Support the professional development of staff and the creation of production tools, Best Practices, Technical Policies & Procedures, Papers & Presentations, Professional Credentialing and practice‑group activities.

Lead proposal technical reviews (Blue‑Team Reviews).

Participate in root‑cause analysis and contribute solutions for challenging project issues.

Participate in or lead PARRs (Project Approach Review Resources).

Achieve a 70%–75% utilization goal by supporting projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Active participant in ongoing technical working groups (both internal and external).

Subject‑matter expert or strong knowledge of a variety of physical/outdoor design concepts, including but not limited to:

Constructability and design criteria ,

Bus span calculations ,

AC and DC sizing and loading ,

Raceway design ,

Cable design ,

Material selection ,

BOM development ,

Grounding design ,

Lightning protection design ,

Substation lighting design ,

Major substation equipment specification development , and experience in mentoring and coordinating physical‑design workshare across multiple area offices.

Strong knowledge of best practices, industry standards and codes related to substation outdoor/physical design.

General knowledge of substation design software such as CDEGS, WinIGS, etc.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a professional, architecture, engineering or closely related field.

At least 10 years of industry experience.

Commitment to HDR values of quality, improvement and collaboration.

Professional or engineering registration with related technical experience.

Experience developing and managing diverse teams.

Collaborative working relationship with area business‑class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers.

Active participation in HDR’s employee‑owned culture is a must.
