Deputy News Editor

to report directly to the News Editor and lead our daily news coverage. The Deputy News Editor will oversee a team of breaking news and enterprise reporters, ensuring we are providing the agenda‑setting and audience‑driving stories that will be the talk of Los Angeles and California. We’re looking for someone who loves news, newsrooms and will thrive leading a dedicated, hungry team that is world‑class in all they do. Responsibilities:

Lead daily news coverage across Los Angeles and California, ensuring The California Post sets the agenda on the stories that matter locally, regionally and nationally.

Oversee a team of breaking news and enterprise reporters, providing clear direction and mentorship.

Monitor breaking news and make quick, high‑impact decisions about coverage priorities.

Shape coverage with fresh ideas and unique story angles that distinguish our reporting.

Build, develop, and maintain strong sources across politics, government, business, culture, and local affairs.

Collaborate with audience, photo, video, and social teams to maximize reach and impact of coverage across platforms.

Maintain the highest editorial standards under pressure, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and speed.

Drive newsroom innovation by introducing processes, tools, and strategies that enhance workflow and content quality.

Contribute to long‑term editorial planning, identifying areas for enterprise reporting and investigative projects.

Requirements:

Minimum of 8 years of professional journalism experience, including editing responsibilities and demonstrated newsroom leadership.

Proven experience managing a newsroom or large editorial team in a fast‑paced environment.

Strong track record of breaking news and shaping coverage at the local, state, and national levels.

Deep knowledge of Los Angeles and California’s political, cultural, and business landscape, with established sources.

Excellent news judgment, headline writing, and copy‑editing skills.

Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop talent, while holding teams accountable to high standards.

Comfort making coverage decisions under intense deadlines without sacrificing quality.

Experience collaborating across editorial, design, photo, and digital strategy teams.

Vision and initiative to help build a startup newsroom, with the creativity and drive to make The California Post stand out.

Note: This role will be expected to report on‑site 5 days per week.

Base pay range: $125,000–$150,000 per year.
