Early Career Substation Civil Designer (U.S.) WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Civil Designer for our Freeport, Maine office. The position may also be considered for locations in Augusta, ME; Foxborough, MA; Syracuse, NY; Ann Arbor, MI; and Columbus, OH. The candidate will work on projects with the Power Delivery Northeast Civil/Structural Substation Team, contributing to the design of new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions.

Responsibilities

Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Involve in all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions.

Provide all aspects of electrical civil design including permitting support, site design, foundation design, structure design, and control building design.

Learn, understand, and implement CAD knowledge; learn client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure that work produced conforms to the client’s standards and expectations; be responsible for knowing and following POWER’s standards, procedures, and processes; collaborate on design issues; and seek guidance from more experienced colleagues.

Prepare drawing packages to satisfy client and code requirements.

Required Qualifications

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.

0–2 years civil design/drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering work environment.

Ability to successfully participate in multiple projects concurrently.

Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail.

Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with team members.

Legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates/technical degree in an accredited drafting program or sufficient industry experience.

Experience in electric utility substation design (15 kV through 500 kV).

Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or Microstation Open‑Roads (In‑Roads).

Experience with Autodesk Raster Design or Bentley Descartes.

Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Good background with mathematics.

Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $41,000–$67,800. WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
