To lead the day‑to‑day activities of the Structural Design team, ensuring high‑quality design outputs, efficient workflow, accurate customer solutions, and close collaboration with sales, operations and technical teams.

The Design Team Leader acts as the first line of support for designers, helping them overcome challenges, maintain standards, and deliver a consistent, professional service to customers and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Workflow Management

Allocate design briefs and manage the daily schedule to ensure fast, accurate turnaround of drawings, samples and customer proposals.

Monitor workload and adjust priorities according to customer urgency, production capacity, and business needs.

Be the first point of contact for designers needing support, guidance or technical direction.

Provide hands‑on assistance with CAD (Kasemake/AG CAD) when required.

Quality Control & Best Practice

Review and approve drawings, samples, and specifications before they progress to customers or production.

Ensure all work complies with design standards, board performance expectations, and manufacturing constraints.

Maintain template libraries, specification databases, and ensure consistent file naming and drawing formats.

Collaboration & Communication

Liaise daily with Sales, Operations and Technical teams to clarify briefs, resolve issues, and ensure accurate interpretation of customer requirements.

Lead daily/weekly design huddles to support communication and workflow planning.

Attend customer visits alongside Sales or Technical to support design reviews, new projects, or problem‑solving.

Coaching & Development

Support designers with training on CAD, sampling equipment and Sheard processes.

Identify skill gaps and work with the Design Manager to build and implement training plans.

Promote a culture of creativity, continuous improvement and learning.

Process & Systems Ownership

Ensure design processes, documentation and procedures are followed consistently.

Track key performance indicators (sample lead time, design accuracy, error rates, workload balance).

Highlight opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste and refine workflow.

Ownership and a proactive response to quality INCRs.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

Develop a long‑term vision for the design function, ensuring capability aligns with business growth plans and customer expectations.

Lead the innovation agenda across structural design, sample development, sustainability and new packaging concepts.

Set performance targets for the design department, including efficiencies, service levels, accuracy and customer satisfaction.

Champion design‑led customer experience improvements, ensuring Sheard delivers solutions that delight customers and reinforce our market positioning.

Represent the design function during customer visits to ensuring a professional, consistent and impressive experience.

Operational Excellence & Efficiency

Analyse processes, workflow and throughput to identify improvements and operational efficiencies.

Implement systems, standards and continuous improvement plans to reduce design errors, speed up sampling and enhance manufacturability.

Work closely with Operations to ensure design outputs match machine capability and tooling constraints, while satisfying the customer’s request.

Being the main contact for tooling suppliers, ensuring quality, standards and best practices are adhered to.

Manage, mentor and develop the Design Team Leader and wider design team, creating a culture of accountability, creativity and high performance.

Support recruitment, onboarding and training.

Manage and lead team personal development reviews of the design team, ensuring training plans for team are in place.

Process & Systems Ownership (duplicate)

Ensure design processes (SOPs), documentation and procedures are followed consistently.

Track key performance indicators (sample lead time, design accuracy, error rates, workload balance).

Highlight opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste and refine workflow.

Skills & Experience Required

Strong experience in structural corrugated design within a packaging manufacturer or design centre.

Proficiency in CAD systems (Kasemake/AG CAD, ArtiosCAD or equivalent).

Understanding of corrugated materials, board grades, FEFCO standards and manufacturing constraints.

Experience overseeing designers, mentoring colleagues or project management.

Ability to manage multiple projects and work under pressure.

Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.

High attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
