Overview
We are searching for an experienced Architectural Design Manager to join the team of a well-respected design/build firm.
Design manager is responsible for developing and overseeing the design process to ensure an effective and coordinated outcome that enables resolute construction.
This includes high-level oversight of the design process, schedule and deliverables.
The Design-Build Team can vary greatly depending on the size and complexity of the projects, which in turn will affect the number of responsibilities the Architectural Design Manager will be involved in. Within this leadership position, you will harness and help to grow the Design team, including both new and veteran team members within architectural, interior and building design disciplines.
Additionally, this role ensures constant communication occurs throughout internal Design+Build processes, supporting growth opportunities for the individuals, the department and the impact this team has on the company as a whole. Remaining an active team member by also working on projects remains an important part of this role.
Leadership, forward / creative thinking, and drive are core attributes desired for this position. A passion for building science, resiliency and making a caring difference within homes throughout central Iowa is expected and a must.
Duties and responsibilities
Design Process Management, Tracking & Reporting
Forecast and identify resource requirements.
Create and manage project timelines/schedules to meet client expectations.
Perform risk assessment and analysis.
Lead project status meetings and communicate/report information to key stakeholders.
Review project deliverables and maintain project information repository.
Resolve project design conflicts as needed.
Provide a high level of organization and planning throughout the project life cycle.
Generate & present design metrics/dashboard/reports as deemed necessary by the Operations Manager.
Review of Final Drawings and Specifications
Ensure completeness and accuracy of drawings and specifications.
Ensure an allowance schedule is created and followed to ensure product selections are made timely as not to cause delay in the production schedule.
Sales & Design Staff Management
Recognize design team needs and make recommendations, in conjunction with Operations Manager, for hiring and firing. Assist with keeping the employees moral high. Communicate openly.
Identify situations needing either praise or disciplinary action. Refer serious infractions or repetitive violations/problematic behaviors Operations Manager.
Coach and evaluate all design employees and co-chair their annual staff reviews.
Make recommendations for training needs and topics for design employees.
Manage broad, diverse team of Interior and Building Designers who create, coordinate, and execute multiple simultaneous residential projects. Assist team members in learning processes and growing professionally.
This role manages direct reports. The Architectural Design Manager’s responsibilities will include conducting professional 1-to-1 sessions that review performance, provide mentorship, and support other peoples’ management duties or responsibilities.
Lead and empower Design team members to proactively flag and solve project issues.
Ensure that the Design team design solutions are effectively communicated to the broader design and construction team, resulting in proper execution. Ensure that design intent is maintained, from design through procurement, construction, and opening.
Liaise with the other Disciplines on the Design+Build Development team, maintaining consistent coordination of work processes and deliverables across disciplines.
Stay current with design decisions regarding furniture, fixtures & equipment (FF&E) and liaise with Supply Chain and Logistics leadership to optimize FF&E selection and procurement.
Produce complete design packages, including interiors drawings and specifications, and operational documentation.
In your management role, be a mentor to team members by providing guidance, feedback, QA/QC, and direction on design methodologies.
Understand wall systems, building details and holistic approach to residential design, construction and code integration.
Be a main point of contact and escalation for interior designers and architects on the team.
Oversee creation and implementation of sales & design systems and procedures in collaboration with Sales Manager.
Establish expectations and goals for the sales/design department.
Represent the department to the Operations Manager and Owner.
