Teacher – Visual Art, Grades K‑8 (Long‑Term Substitute) (SY25–26)

Reports to: Principal/Head of School

Responsibilities

  • Teach visual art to students from grades K‑8.

  • Accountability for Student Achievement – Set ambitious learning goals for all students, assess student understanding regularly, take ownership of instructional adjustments to reach goals despite setbacks, and remain passionate and optimistic about students and the teaching profession.
  • Communicating Content Knowledge – Demonstrate mastery of visual art and the associated pedagogy, connect content to real‑world settings, and convey knowledge creatively and engagingly in alignment with standards.
  • Equitable & Effective Instruction – Scaffold and differentiate instruction for all students, use practices that challenge and engage students, and build a productive learning environment where every student is valued.
  • Cultural Proficiency – Actively create an environment that respects diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges.
  • Parent/Family Engagement – Engage with families and build collaborative, respectful relationships to support student learning.
  • Professional Reflection & Collaboration – Reflect on practice, respond to feedback, and contribute to a collaborative adult learning community.

Qualifications – Required

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching License for Visual Art at the appropriate level.
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and “Highly Qualified” as per NCLB.
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by Boston Public Schools.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.

Qualifications – Preferred

  • Experience teaching in urban schools.
  • Bilingual or trilingual skills; fluency in one of BPS's official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.).
  • Certification in Moderate Disabilities or English as a Second Language at the appropriate grade level(s).
