Job Overview

Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is recruiting for an Operations Communication Specialist. The position supports various control centers by receiving, processing, coordinating, and notifying MTA customers and Operations Management of service delays and disruptions via e‑news alerts, MTA webpage, station announcements, and hyperalert (internal notifications). The Specialist monitors control center systems for conditions affecting MTA service, identifies potential service issues for bus operations, coordinates station announcements, and dispatches general service updates across communication channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and process service delay/disruption information from control centers.
  • Coordinate and notify customers via e‑news alerts, website updates, station announcements, and internal hyperalerts.
  • Monitor traffic cameras, AVL system, and other tools to proactively identify service issues for Bus Operations.
  • Use PA systems at Metro Subway Link and Light Rail Link stations to notify customers of service delays.
  • Post updates on MTA’s Internet and notify administration and operational staff of service incidents.
  • Dispatch general service updates and other information received from control centers for Bus, Light Rail Link, and Metro Subway Link.
  • Communicate via radio, phone, and computer in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Work in a 24/7 environment; may be required to work overnight, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Four years of administrative or professional work experience.
  • At least two years of administrative or professional customer service experience, including dispatching or delivering important information to the public.
  • Knowledge of traffic monitoring, AVL systems, PA systems, and transit operations (selective qualification).
  • Certificates or degrees may substitute for experience (30 college credits per year up to four years, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree).
  • Military service experience in staff work related to rules, regulations, policies, procedures, or coordination of unit operations may substitute for experience.

Work Schedule

24‑hour shift schedule; may be required to work overnight, weekends, and holidays.
