Job Description
- Teach Communication Studies and related courses to a diverse student population. Courses include, but are not limited to, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Intercultural Communication, Argumentation and Debate, and courses supporting the Forensics Program.
- Serve as Director of Forensics and share responsibilities in the program, including teaching and related activities.
- Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees.
- Participate in professional development activities and co‑curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
- Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes and the assessment cycle.
- Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in meetings.
- Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods, modalities, and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies.
- Maintain distance education certification and compliance.
- Perform related duties, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with policies.
- Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse student population through careful preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback.
- Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse or historically underserved.
- Work cooperatively with staff and students; evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required.
Special Requirements
The award of all degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. Grade cards will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts. All degrees and coursework used to satisfy the required minimum qualifications must be submitted from accredited postsecondary institutions. Evaluations of foreign degrees or coursework are required. Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication.
- OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English.
- OR Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject area.
- OR Equivalent qualifications determined by the District Equivalency Committee.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and sensitivity to diverse student backgrounds.
Desirable Qualifications
- Two years of experience teaching Communication Studies in person to underserved student populations.
- Experience in teaching argumentation and/or coaching policy or parliamentary debate.
- Experience in coaching competitive intercollegiate individual events.
- Successful experience in recruitment, coaching, and coordination of a forensics program.
- Educational philosophy emphasizing student learning.
- Demonstrated ability to apply current theories, methods, and modalities of teaching Communication Studies.
- Ability to teach students of diverse learning styles, levels of preparation, and backgrounds.
- Evidence of service to educational institutions and contributions to the profession.
- Interest in design and assessment of curriculum and student learning outcomes.
- Experience in creating equitable outcomes for all students.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
Working Conditions
Salary Range: $85,541 – $128,379 Annually.

Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources.
