Position Overview

We are hiring for a Reference Librarian to join the Wauwatosa Public Library part‑time! This role will be responsible for assisting library users in locating and evaluating information, teaching them how to use library resources, assisting patrons in computer usage, curating the up‑to‑date and balanced collection, developing engaging programming, and inspiring lifelong learning.

Schedule and Pay

This position is scheduled for 20 hours per week. The work schedule would be Monday 12:30‑8 PM, Thursday 1‑5 PM, Friday 12‑5 PM, with the remaining 4 hours determined after hire. Approximately every third Saturday 8:30 AM‑5 PM (9 AM‑1 PM in the summer) and every third Sunday 12:30‑4 PM (closed in summer) are required; the 3.5 hours worked on Sunday add to the normal 20‑hour week. Pay range is $35.99–$45.99 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Essential Functions

  • Assist people with finding library materials and answering general reference and IT‑related questions in‑person, on the phone, and via email.
  • Purchase, weed, organize, and maintain non‑fiction, fiction, and other collections.
  • Plan, promote, and facilitate young adult and adult programming.
  • Compile statistics each month for the library’s monthly report.
  • Provide supervision to volunteers for special projects, computer use, and paging slips.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA‑accredited university.
  • Minimum of 2 years reference experience in a public library.
  • Experience in maintaining a budget.

  • Excellent customer service and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to stay calm and professional with disruptive patrons and de‑escalate situations.
  • Strong information‑searching, multi‑tasking, technical, editing, and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of literature.
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships with community members, organizations, and businesses.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computer applications for library services and proficiency in computer operation.
  • Ability to gather statistics, analyze information, and present reports both orally and in writing.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to lift, manipulate, and carry, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stoop, reach, and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.

Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
