Part-Time Adult Reference Librarian Job at City of Wauwatosa in Wauwatosa

We are hiring for a Reference Librarian to join the Wauwatosa Public Library part-time! This role will be responsible for assisting library users in locating and evaluating information, teaching them how to use library resources, assisting patrons in computer usage, curating the up-to-date and balanced collection, developing engaging programming, and inspiring lifelong learning.
The pay range for this position is $35.99 - $45.99 per hour, with the starting salary depending on experience and qualifications. This position is scheduled for 20 hours per week. The work schedule is as follows: Monday 12:30‑8:00 PM, Thursday 1:00‑5:00 PM, and Friday 12:00‑5:00 PM. The remaining 4 hours will be determined after hire. It also requires approximately every 3rd Saturday 8:30 AM‑5:00 PM (9:00‑1:00 PM in the summer) and approximately every 3rd Sunday 12:30 PM‑4:00 PM (closed in summer). The 3.5 hours worked on Sunday are in addition to the normal 20‑hour work week.
Responsibilities
- Assists people with finding library materials and answering general reference and IT-related questions in-person, on the phone, and via email.
- Purchases, weeds, organizes, and maintains non-fiction, fiction, and other collections.
- Plans, promotes, and facilitates young adult and adult programming.
- Compiles statistics each month for the library’s monthly report.
- Provides supervision to volunteers for special projects, computer, and paging slips.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited university.
- Minimum of 2 years reference experience in a public library.
- Experience in maintaining a budget.

- Strong information searching, multi‑tasking, technical, editing, and writing skills.
- Knowledge of literature.
- Ability to build relationships and partnerships with members of the public, community organizations, and businesses.
- Thorough knowledge of computer applications for library services and proficiency in computer operation.
- Ability to gather statistics, analyze information and present reports, both orally and in writing.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to lift, manipulate and carry; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stoop, reach, and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to focus.
