Portage County Public Library is hiring a part‑time (20 hrs / wk) Library Associate. This position is based at the Stevens Point location, but some hours may be spent at other branch locations.

Base pay range

$18.82/hr - $18.82/hr

Job responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of basic customer service activities at the customer service desk, including answering telephone, taking messages, answering questions, and referring library customers to appropriate personnel.
  • Locates and assists both children and adults in locating desired materials from PCPL shelves; provides readers’ advisory to children and teens, helps youth select appropriate library materials, answers questions and provides general information about children's library materials, and may provide research and use of library resources to library customers as needed. Refers complex information and research requests to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists children and adults in use of the library’s online catalog and other computer–based products available at the library.
  • Maintains customer confidentiality in accordance with WI Statutes Chapter 43.30.
  • Performs a wide variety of activities that support the children’s and YA programs and services such as planning, performing, and/or assisting with storytimes and puppet shows, both in‑house and at various county locations; assists with school programs, ongoing programs, tours, the Summer Library Program, displays, book talks, special events, and the development and maintenance of storytelling aids; assists with the library’s volunteer program.
  • Assists with the rotation of library‑owned material to branches, including selection and delivery to daycares and other branch sites, and may drive a vehicle to appropriate locations.
  • Makes library materials more presentable by picking up area including periodicals, books, toys, etc.; transports materials to appropriate location, and reshelves in proper alpha‑numeric order.
  • Responds to user complaint procedures presented in person or by telephone according to procedures; refers to the Circulation work unit or Youth Services Librarian(s) for assistance when needed.
  • Verifies patron and circulation records on the library’s circulation system; checks out Materials and checks‑in returned rotated materials per library procedures; takes returned library materials to appropriate shelves and reshelves.
  • Types book lists, brochures, flyers, and reports using a personal computer and appropriate word‑processing or desktop‑publishing software; may develop and prepare book lists and publicity items for the work unit under the guidance of the librarian.
  • Handles photocopying and duplication of materials prepared for library use.
  • Prepares work‑related correspondence for the Youth Services Librarian(s).
  • Runs errands, delivers or picks up items at various county library sites, assists library customers with basic operation of library equipment, adds supplies to photocopier and other library‑owned machines as needed; assists with weeding (de‑acquisition) of library materials under direction of librarian.

Minimum requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Background in children’s and/or YA literature and/or childhood education or comparable experience preferred.
  • Prior library experience preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and good driving record.
