Portage County Public Library – Library Associate
Part‑time position (20 hrs/week), based in the Stevens Point location with possible hours at other branch locations.
Pay starts at $18.82 per hour in 2026.
Primary Job Duties
Customer Service
- Performs a wide variety of basic customer service activities at the youth services desk, including answering telephone, taking messages, and referring customers to appropriate personnel.
- Locates and assists both children and adults in locating desired materials from PCPL shelves. Provides readers’ advisory to children and teens, helping them select appropriate library materials. Gives general information about children’s library materials and may refer complex information and research requests to appropriate personnel.
- Assists both children and adults in using the library’s online catalog and other computer‑based products.
- Maintains customer confidentiality (WI Statutes Chapter 43.30).
Children’s and YA Program Support
- Plans, performs, and/or assists with storytimes and puppet shows, both in‑house and at various county locations, under general direction of librarian.
- Assists with school programs, ongoing programs, tours, the Summer Library Program, displays, booktalks, special events, etc.
- Develops and maintains storytelling aides.
- Assists with the library’s volunteer program.
Youth Services Unit Activities
- Assists with the rotation of library‑owned material to branches, including selecting and rotating material for delivery to daycares and other branch sites; may drive vehicle to appropriate locations.
- Maintains the appearance of library areas, picks up periodicals, books, toys, etc., and reshelves items in proper alphanumeric order.
- Responds to user complaints procedures presented in person or by telephone and refers issues to the Circulation work unit or Youth Services Librarian for assistance.
- Verifies patron and circulation records on the library’s system and checks out or checks in materials according to procedures; may reshelve returned materials in proper order.
Clerical Activities
- Types book lists, brochures, flyers, and reports using appropriate word‑processing or desktop publishing software; may develop and prepare book lists and publicity items with librarian guidance.
- Handles photocopying and duplication of materials as needed.
- Prepares work‑related correspondence for the Youth Services Librarian(s).
- Runs errands, delivers or picks up items at county library sites, assists library customers with basic operation of library equipment, and adds supplies to photocopier and other machines as needed. Helps with weeding (de‑acquisition) of library materials under librarian direction.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Background in children’s and/or YA literature and/or childhood education or comparable experience preferred.
- Prior library experience preferred.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and good driving record.
