Essential Duties

  1. Ensure the efficient day‑to‑day operations of department or branch(es). Schedule and assign the work of direct reports. Provide training for employees to effectively complete their work assignments and stay current on new technologies and trends in libraries. Monitor, coach, and evaluate performance of staff. Conduct regular staff meetings and individual updates. Ensure staff understand, participate in, and champion the Library’s mission, strategic direction, and values. Work with administration to hire, discipline, and terminate direct reports as appropriate. Participate in all department duties as necessary to provide and model excellent customer service. Research, plan, implement, and promote the programs and services offered by branches or departments in alignment with Brown County Library standards, and guide staff to do the same. Maintain library collections by working with the Collection Development Manager and appropriate selectors. Plan space and amenities within department/branch to meet the needs of customers and align with system standards. Oversight of accurate cash handling and creating Deposits, and other financial responsibilities for the branch or department.
  2. Model appropriate skills for staff to assist customers with using the Library. Meet customers’ needs for information by answering questions and locating appropriate library resources. Recommend books and other resources and services based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection. Provide help with library technology such as public computers, the library catalog, and digital resources. Use library circulation system to check materials in and out, and perform customer service for library patrons.
  3. Develop and implement Brown County Library‑wide initiatives. Attend Library meetings and training to maintain knowledge base. Compile information for assigned operational reports. Analyze data to evaluate the success of programs and services. Lead Brown County Library‑wide services such as research and information services, youth services, adult and senior services, staff training, and circulation. Recommend appropriate branch or department staffing levels. Develop programs and/or services eligible for grant funding, and work with Administration to write and submit grant applications. Plan, prepare, and implement grant programs with administrative oversight. Develop internal procedures, and ensure compliance with Brown County Library standards and policies. Prepare and submit Brown County Library budget requests and Friends of the Brown County Library funding requests for departments or branches.
  4. Build and maintain community relationships through networking and outreach. Strengthen community contacts, relating library objectives and services that meet community needs. Act as a liaison to community groups and organizations to build partnerships that extend library services through that group. Speak publicly as an expert in a subject area or about library services. Work with community organizations to provide services or programming that meet customer needs. Contribute to and participate in professional activity at the local, state, and national levels.

  • Knowledge of leadership, supervisory and personnel management techniques.
  • Knowledge of current and developing technologies as they relate to public library operations and services.
  • Ability to hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and discipline employees.
  • Effectively administer and interpret Brown County Library policies and procedures.
  • Exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions.
  • Detailed knowledge of public library principles, practices and techniques.
  • Assess users’ needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service.
  • Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the building.
  • Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions or refer to Administration when necessary.
  • Make presentations to varying sized groups of youth and adults.
  • Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others.
  • Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Appropriately multitask and prioritize.
  • Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail.
  • Follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • Effectively use general office equipment and software, including computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash drawer, audio‑visual equipment, word processing, and email.
  • Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including working with library‑specific software and databases, and efficient use of Automated Materials Handling system.
