Position Summary
The Business Strategist’s primary responsibility is to lead the Strategy team’s mandate to provide timely, insightful, and actionable, high‑level data‑driven recommendations that directly support company growth and profitability. Ideal candidates have 2+ years of consulting experience (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG) or 5+ years in retail corporate strategy at management level.
Core responsibilities include synthesizing information and market intelligence into compelling narratives and strategic recommendations that inform executive‑level decision making across Planning, Merchandising, Marketing, and Operations.
Scope and Impact
Role requires frequent cross‑functional interaction with C‑level and EVP/SVP senior executives from Merchandising, Marketing, Finance, Broadcast Planning, Supply Chain, and IT. Recommendations influence the company’s overall planning, direction, and capital deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership and Opportunity Identification
- Lead strategic analysis to identify major growth and profit improvement opportunities across Broadcast, E‑commerce, and Retail channels.
- Serve as subject matter expert on retail performance indicators: sell‑through, inventory turnover, margin, basket size, and CLTV.
- Lead root‑cause analysis on performance shifts, articulating the “why” and proposing comprehensive solutions.
- Conduct extensive research on internal capabilities and external environments, providing business and competitive intelligence.
- Drive investigative analysis using a hypothesis‑driven approach to vet opportunities for strategic investment.
- Mine corporate data to support strategic plans related to customers, merchandising categories, capital productivity, marketing, and overall operational performance.
- Financial Planning and Business Case Development
- Lead development of comprehensive business cases for strategic initiatives, modeling payoff, investments, and risk over time.
- Identify key financial drivers for specific strategy initiatives.
- Translate ambiguous business questions into structured analytical frameworks and back to actionable strategic plans.
- Conduct advanced ad‑hoc and pro‑forma analyses in support of critical financial and operational decisions.
- Measurement, Visualization, and Executive Reporting
- Oversee design of measurement systems for pilots and strategic tests, ensuring alignment between hypotheses and key outcomes.
- Structure and present complex analytical findings to C‑level and non‑technical stakeholders in a clear, concise, persuasive manner.
- Direct creation of dashboards and reports (Tableau, Power BI), focusing on strategic insight.
- Track results against key drivers and incorporate measurements from pilots into the operating plan.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Strategy, Finance, Business Analytics, Economics, or related quantitative discipline is required. MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
- 2+ years at a consulting firm (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etc.) or 5+ years in a Retail Strategy/Corporate Strategy role with strong quantitative focus.
- Experience supporting Retail, E‑commerce, or Media organizations preferred.
