Social Media Writer/Communications Manager National Science Foundation

Role Summary

Do you have a passion for translating complex science into compelling stories? As the Social Media Writer/Communications Manager at the National Science Foundation (NSF), you will be the primary voice shaping the agency's digital presence. You will strategically craft and manage all content that communicates the profound impact of NSF‑funded research and science discovery. This role supports leadership messaging and ensures communications effectively engage a broad, diverse audience—including scientists, educators, students, and the general public.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Draft, schedule, and publish platform‑appropriate copy for director and NSF accounts, including live event coverage.
  • Collect multimedia, curate hashtags/handles, and coordinate with host agencies' social teams for event coverage.
  • Monitor social trends during events and advise leadership on emerging issues.
  • Produce brief post‑event summaries and coordinate with metrics analysts to produce engagement reports.
  • Ensure all content follows Plain Language and clearance protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Digital Media, or equivalent experience.
  • 3–5 years of social media management, content creation, and analytics experience.
  • Strong writing/editing skills, familiarity with major platforms’ best practices, and experience coordinating live coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing executive‑level social accounts and working with agency leadership.
  • Familiarity with social listening and scheduling tools.

Deliverables

  • Content Calendars—Develop and maintain editorial calendars that outline scheduled posts across platforms.
  • Live‑Event Posts—Draft and publish real‑time social media updates during NSF‑hosted or partner events.
  • Post‑Event Summaries—Produce concise summaries that capture event highlights, key messages, and performance.
  • Monthly Engagement Reports—Collaborate with analytics teams to produce reports that track reach, engagement, and content effectiveness.

Location & Hours

Primarily at the headquarters in Alexandria, VA; availability for nights and weekends.

Performance Measures

  • Engagement Metrics: Consistently produce content that drives strong audience interaction, including reach, shares, and meaningful engagement.
  • Timeliness for Live Coverage: Deliver accurate, well‑crafted posts in real time during events.
  • Error‑Free Publishing Rate: Publish content with zero factual, grammatical, or formatting errors.
  • Leadership Satisfaction: Content is consistently approved and endorsed by NSF leadership.
