Job Summary KALB has a rare opening for News Director. We seek a high‑energy, hands‑on newsroom leader to mentor and develop a talented staff. The Candidate will coach talent, own big stories, and lead breaking news and weather coverage.

Responsibilities

Establish long‑range objectives and specify strategies and actions to achieve them.

Identify developmental needs of staff and coach, mentor or help improve knowledge and skills.

Prepare and maintain departmental budgets.

Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and other office equipment.

Execute a Breaking News Strategy.

Meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Listen fully to understand employee needs and communicate solutions.

Develop a creative news strategy based on research, follow the station brand, and execute during all newscasts.

Additional Responsibilities

Lead and supervise all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production.

Manage all aspects of the News Department (other than Production).

Plan and manage staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News Department.

Make decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.

Develop a news coverage strategy for the station and its website.

Critique newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage, and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.

Assign projects to staff and verify deadlines are met.

Ensure achievement of viewer rating goals.

Determine programming and evaluation of equipment needed to produce quality programming.

Respond to coverage questions.

Work with other senior station leaders to establish and reach station goals.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Be extremely detail‑oriented.

Manage breaking news for continuous coverage for several hours at a time.

Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work‑related experience.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Minimum five years of experience in news programming production, with at least two years in a leadership role.

Experience guiding, directing, and motivating teams, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
