Job Summary The Manager of Project Design at Jim Myers & Sons Inc. (JMS) plays a crucial leadership role within the Business Unit. This position is responsible for leading the design team, ensuring high-quality and efficient design outputs, and developing standard operating procedures to enhance productivity. The Manager of Project Design will lead by example, providing hands-on mentoring, conducting regular training sessions, and managing the performance of design team personnel. This role demands a strong leader with extensive design knowledge, excellent project management skills, and the ability to drive continuous improvement in project execution processes.

Responsibilities

Manage and schedule all project design workload and evaluate quality and timeliness of deliverables

Manage, mentor, and hold the project design team accountable to ensure high performance

Provide training, guidance, and support to enhance the skills and knowledge of the project design team

Conduct regular performance management and evaluations of team members

Develop and report on individual and departmental KPIs

Carry a designer workload and adhere to project schedules and specifications to meet project objectives and milestones

Check designs for form, fit, function, and overall accuracy of the team’s work

Create policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to promote efficiency, productivity, and minimize rework.

Participate in post-mortem analysis to manage feedback and drive quick turnaround of product improvements.

Collaborate with internal teams to ensure quality and timing requirements are being met

Provide support on design issues with project engineering and manufacturing

Work with project engineering and detailing to resolve design issues

Work effectively and efficiently with project team members on multiple projects simultaneously

Travel to plant sites as required for field measurements, installation support, and troubleshooting

Follow all company policies and procedures along with corporate directives

Qualifications, Desired Experience, and Skills

Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks with proven ability to create robust 3D models using API for automation

Must possess a minimum 7 years (12,000+ hours) of experience in 3D modeling with SolidWorks

High level of knowledge/experience with applying drafting standards to fabrication level drawing packages

High level of knowledge/experience with the design of mechanical equipment, weldments, and assemblies

Strong background in the design of mechanical equipment with high attention to detail

Ability to work effectively & efficiently with project team members on multiple projects simultaneously

Strong communication skills including the ability to negotiate positive outcomes

Knowledge of fabrication processes such as bending, punching, welding, machining, etc.

Experience with power transmission equipment including motors, gearboxes, chain drives, shafts & bearings

Experience with electrical power, instrumentation, and controls

Experience with the municipal water and wastewater industry

Experience with 2D design and detailing with AutoCAD a plus

Certified SolidWorks Expert (CSWE) a plus

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant field of engineering with equivalent combination of experience
