Heavy Equipment Mechanic (JC-502199)
Caltrans invites applications for the Heavy Equipment Mechanic position (Job Code: JC-502199). This role plays a key part in maintaining and repairing Caltrans’ heavy equipment fleet across the state.
Base pay range $67,296.00 per year – $80,676.00 per year.
About the Position Within the Division of Equipment (DOE) and under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker, the incumbent will work in both shop and field environments. Responsibilities include:
Constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing a variety of heavy equipment used in Caltrans’ fleet.
Completing records and reports and using computer equipment for various tasks.
Assisting in instructing or giving direction to helpers, apprentices, or other employees.
Ensuring safe use and handling of materials, tools, equipment, and facilities while using personal protective equipment (PPE).
Working outside or traveling to field mechanic locations or highway maintenance stations as needed, including exposure to inclement weather.
Participating in the daily operation of the shop when required.

Qualifications
Valid Class C driver license.
Valid, safe working relationship with the equipment.
Ability to work in inclement weather, including severe cold or heat.
Strong problem‑solving and mechanical aptitude.
