Overview

The Firmwide Data Office (FDO) sits within Morgan Stanley Technology and focuses on data as a key priority within the overall Technology and the Firm strategy.

We are a team of around 200+ people distributed globally and are engaged in a wide array of projects touching all business units (Institutional Securities, Investment Management, Wealth Management) and functions (Operations, Finance, Risk, Trading, Treasury, Resilience, Production Management) across the Firm. The team vision is a multi‑year effort to improve data governance & management practices, to demonstrate data quality controls, simplify the firm’s data architecture and business processes front‑to‑back, empower developers by providing consistent means of handling data, and facilitate data‑driven insights & decision making.

Program Description

We are working on an exciting new initiative to build an Enterprise Knowledge Graph by harnessing the power of Graph and Semantic technologies along with Big Data and other innovative technologies to map complex business, application, data, and infrastructure asset relationships to facilitate data‑driven insights and decision making.

Role

The Firmwide Data Office department is recruiting for an enthusiastic, dynamic, hands‑on and delivery focused Application Development Lead (Technical Architect) for this innovative program that plans to harness the power of Graph & Semantic Technologies to build an Enterprise Knowledge Graph. As a member of our Software Development team, we look first and foremost for people who are passionate about solving business problems through innovation and engineering practices. You will be required to apply your depth of knowledge and expertise to all aspects of the software development lifecycle, and partner with stakeholders to stay focused on business goals. Responsibilities

  • Leading diverse technology team contributing to this strategic initiative
  • Develop people through coaching, mentoring and management
  • Lead the design, development and support of full‑stack, n‑tier distributed applications
  • Act as a thought leader in the technical space through researching and knowing industry trends as well as cutting‑edge tools and technologies
  • Collaborate with business and other technology teams to translate business requirements into innovative solutions implementing performant, scalable, resilient distributed applications
  • Work closely with business and technology stakeholders to align development priorities & planning with product and technology roadmap

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics or related field
  • 12+ years of extensive experience designing and implementing n‑tier distributed applications, large‑scale data pipelines, Web applications
  • Successful experience leading high‑performing development and engineering teams with a proven and demonstrable track record of execution and delivery
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, business acumen, and demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills with both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Experience & expertise across following aspects:
    • Java – Core Java, Multithreading, Spring, Caching, Security/Authentication
    • API Design and Development – REST, GraphQL, JSON, Microservices Architecture
    • Experience architecting, designing and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure or AWS.
    • Design Patterns, Object Oriented Design
    • Agile Development, TDD, BDD
    • Full software development life cycle
    • Implementing DevOps techniques and practices like Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment, Test Automation, Build Automation and Test‑Driven Development to enable the rapid delivery of working code‑utilizing tools like Jenkins, Gradle and Git
    • Scalability, High Availability, Failover
    • Databases – SQL, Stored Procedures, Query Tuning
    • Python Programming
    • Linux/Unix, Shell Scripting

Desired Skills

  • Semantic and Graph Technologies – Graph DB / Triple Stores like Stardog, NoSQL DBs, SPARQL, Ontology, RDF, OWL, R2RML, Graph Analytics & Inferencing, Graph Visualization using components like D3
  • Experience building Chatbots and other analytics applications using LLMs, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Vector DBs
  • Data Modeling, Ontology development
  • Experience with developing and deploying analytical products
  • Data Ingestion / ETL – using tools like NiFi, Informatica, Autosys
  • UI/Web Development – React, GraphQL, REST, JSON
  • Experience with ML Ops best practices and implementation
  • Experience in Financial Services working with various front‑to‑back business functions like Sales and Trading, Operations, Finance etc.

Benefits & Compensation

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $195,000 and $275,000 per year at the commencement of employment. Base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long‑term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
