Responsibilities
Provide the total range of community college academic, transfer and career counseling to focus on current and former foster youth, including orientation and the development of student educational plans (SEP).
Provide personal counseling to assist students in addressing a variety of personal challenges, including personal relationship issues and problems, development of interpersonal communication skills, psychological and/or behavioral difficulties, decision making skills, chemical dependency problems, gender/sexuality issues and concerns, health problems and concerns.
Provide referrals to external community agencies for housing assistance, and health, mental health and/or professional counseling.
Interpret English/math assessments.
Administer and interpret behavioral skills assessments.
Instruct counseling classes for college success, career planning, study skills and transfer preparation.
Provide Independent Living instruction and facilitate small groups for students on topics of interest as appropriate.
Provide special assistance for students who are on academic probation.
Meet with faculty and other academic staff as necessary to support the individual educational programs of students.
Participate in program development for the NextUp Program, coordinate activities or specialized programs, and evaluate activities or specialized programs.
Develop and maintain excellent working relationship with partners on campus and in the community.
Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed.
Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning.
Work and/or teach in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed.
Otherwise fulfill all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development.
One of the following:
(1) Nine semester units of college coursework predominantly related to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; or
(2) Six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; and
All candidates must have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; or
A valid California Community College Credential; or
The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).
NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline. If the degrees posted on your transcript(s) do not match EXACTLY as stated above, you MUST petition for equivalency.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities.
Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
Related work and professional experience.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students.
Experience working in EOPS.
Experience coordinating community college-based grant funded programs and/or categorical programs.
Experience working with students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities, veterans, and/or single parents.
Experience with reporting to an outside governing agency.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and conflicting demands.
Demonstrated ability to conduct and develop educational workshops.
Proficient utilizing available computer applications and technology related to program coordination, counseling, and instruction.
Commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and a team approach to serving students.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and counsel persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
Successful counseling experience in a community college.
Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
Conditions of Employment 178–181 duty days per year.
Salary and Benefits Starting annual salary is $71,054–$108,773 based on education and experience. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. Additional benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, life insurance, and participation in the California State Teacher's Retirement System (CalSTRS).
Selection Procedure Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all required documents by the closing date, a selection advisory committee will review candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications and then determine who will be invited to interview.
