Description ⛳ Assistant Agronomist

Job Summary

Horseshoe Bay Resort is seeking an experienced and dedicated

Assistant Superintendent

to report directly to the Agronomist. This role involves directing and actively participating in the maintenance of all golf course areas (greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, water features, and cart paths). The Assistant Agronomist will supervise staff, manage equipment usage, oversee complex irrigation systems, and assume the Agronomist’s duties in their absence, as directed. A key requirement is proven proficiency across multiple golf course maintenance specialties.

Core Responsibilities and Duties

Golf Course Maintenance & Supervision:

Direct and participate in the daily maintenance of all golf course components (greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, etc.).

Schedule and supervise the work of maintenance employees and the use of equipment.

Responsible for maintaining the job assignment board, ensuring it is accurate and filled out for the next day before leaving.

Agronomy and Cultural Programs:

Ensure agronomic and cultural programs are achieved and implement necessary changes to management programs.

Requires advanced understanding of agronomy and turfgrass management practices.

Participate in and oversee large-scale operations, including the operation of equipment, repair of infrastructure, and chemical/fertilizer application.

Application and Equipment Management:

Instruct and train equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and mechanical equipment.

Supervise and assist in all chemical/fertilizer

applications , including operating and calibrating application equipment.

Supervise and participate in the operation and maintenance of pumps and the installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.

Personnel Management and Leadership:

Assist in personnel evaluation, employee safety, and discipline.

Modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation when needed.

Fill in for absent staff (Application Technician, Irrigation Technician, Lead Greenskeeper, etc.) to ensure scheduled activities are implemented.

Facility Opening and Closing (Leadership Hours):

Required to arrive

20-30 minutes before

the scheduled crew start time and remain

20-30 minutes after

the crew leaves.

Opening Duties

include: unlocking facilities, turning on lights, checking messages, checking the golf course, adjusting the assignment board, checking the irrigation computer, and performing all other facility opening duties.

Closing Duties

include: securing facilities, performing all Maintenance Facility and Office closing procedures, recording daily logs, posting the next day’s assignments, and scheduling the irrigation computer.

General:

Adhere to all mandatory operational standards, policies, and procedures. Maintain a keen eye for detail.

Employment Standards and Qualifications

Experience/Proficiency:

Must be experienced and proficient

in all duties related to the following positions:

Application Technician

Irrigation Technician

Lead Greenskeeper

Equipment Operator

Greenskeeper

Education (Preferred):

Two- or four-year degree in

Golf Course Management, Turfgrass Management, or a related field

is preferred. Must possess substantial training and hands‑on experience in turfgrass or golf course management.

Technical Knowledge:

Must have an advanced understanding of agronomy and turfgrass management practices, a working knowledge of golf course construction principles and methods, and basic knowledge of electrical systems.

Certifications:

Current state certification or licensing as a

pesticide applicator

is required.

Valid

driver’s license or CDL

is required, with the ability to meet driver insurability requirements. (Minimum age 21+ if driving a licensed Resort vehicle).

Communication & Professionalism:

Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and professional people skills. Ability to comprehend reading materials, speak, read, and write English. Must maintain a neat, pleasant, and professional appearance.

Development:

Required to participate in continuing education opportunities (seminars, workshops, field days, trade shows).

Physical & Mental Requirements

Must have the physical strength, stamina, and agility necessary to perform common golf course maintenance operations tasks.

Employee must

regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds ,

frequently lift, push, and/or move up to 50 pounds

for extended periods, and

occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds with assistance .

Must be able to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to ascend/descend stairs and slopes as a daily routine.
