The Concrete Paving Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all phases of concrete paving operations, ensuring high-quality workmanship, safety compliance, efficient scheduling, and cost-effective execution. This role requires deep knowledge of concrete paving processes, equipment, and materials—including slipform paving operations—and proven leadership experience on roadway, highway, or airfield paving projects.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
Supervise and manage daily concrete paving operations, including labor, equipment, and materials.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, survey/GPS technicians, subcontractors, and inspectors to ensure smooth and timely execution of work.
Plan, schedule, and sequence paving activities to meet project deadlines and production goals.
Monitor concrete quality, slump, air content, finishing standards, cure timing, and compliance with all project specifications.
Oversee slipform paving, stringline/stringless operations, and finishing processes to ensure uniformity and smoothness.
Conduct daily site inspections and toolbox talks, enforcing safety protocols and identifying potential hazards.
Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, mix designs, and job orders.
Track production rates, paving quantities, equipment utilization, and performance metrics; communicate progress and challenges to senior management.
Coordinate with concrete suppliers to ensure timely delivery, mix accuracy, and temperature control.
Ensure proper curing methods, joint layout, saw‑cut timing, and surface finishing techniques.
Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members, promoting teamwork, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and labor hours.
Qualifications
Experience in heavy civil construction with a focus on concrete paving (roadways, airfields, highways, or large slabs).
Experience in a supervisory or superintendent role overseeing concrete paving crews.
Strong knowledge of slipform pavers, curing equipment, dowel bar inserters (DBIs), vibrators, finishing equipment, and supporting machinery.
Proficient in reading and interpreting civil drawings, paving plans, specifications, and contracts.
Strong understanding of DOT standards, concrete mix designs, QC/QA practices, and environmental regulations.
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast‑paced outdoor construction environment.
Experience with GPS/stringless paving systems is a plus.
Proficiency in construction management software is a plus.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, walk, stand; able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
