Auto Mechanic
University of Houston – Department: Phys Plant-Automotive. Salary: Commensurate with Experience/Education.
Description Under general direction from the supervisor, performs maintenance and repairs to university‑owned automotive and utility vehicles.
Perform preventive maintenance on university vehicles, such as oil changes; changing filters; rotating and balancing tires; lubricating; setting engine timing; front‑end alignments; brake adjustments; and clutch repairs.
Perform general maintenance on university vehicles, such as minor and major engine tune‑ups; brake relining; replacement of shocks and ball‑joints; replacement of exhaust systems; repair of hydraulic systems.
Perform a wide variety of general maintenance and basic repairs for 36‑, 48‑, and 72‑volt electric utility vehicles, including but not limited to battery discharge test, drive and control systems diagnostics, and standard vehicle repairs.
Use computerized equipment such as handheld scanners and code readers to diagnose vehicle system problems.
May tow vehicles to garage or start disabled vehicles across campus as needed.
Test vehicles and equipment after repairs are completed.
May change tires, repair flats, wash vehicles, repair body damage, and replace glass.
May be assigned to serve on a special task force during periods of emergency, such as floods, storms, hurricanes, etc.
Perform other job‑related duties as assigned. This job requires a valid Texas driver’s license.
Qualifications MQ: Requires a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc., as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or GED.
Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job‑related experience. Requires technical certification or licensing directly related to the job, as specified on a job description addendum.
Department is willing to accept education in lieu of experience.
