The Community Engagement Strategist will proactively curate, monitor, connect, edit, humanize, communicate, prioritize, and adapt to facilitate productive conversations between the organization and the public, especially online via social media and app-based reporting. This role requires someone who thinks big, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is eager to learn daily. As part of the Community Engagement Division within the Department of Communications & Governmental Affairs, the strategist will lead communication efforts between residents and City staff, build relationships at all levels, and create social media campaigns integrated into broader marketing initiatives. The role involves social listening, website content curation, and efforts to humanize complex public services, maintaining a consistent tone during routine and crisis communications. Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking are essential, with tasks performed independently under general supervision. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Curating Social Media

– Develop, create, and post engaging content aligned with Fargo’s social media voice and goals. Lead social media operations, storytelling, and content management across platforms, including building a social media content calendar and engaging community partners and residents. Monitoring Social Sentiment

– Advise on social media engagement, assess real-time reactions, and adjust strategies based on analytics. Monitor effectiveness through benchmarking and evolve content strategies accordingly. Manage comments and feedback, including during crises, and serve as a liaison during major incidents or emergencies. Connecting with the Community

– Facilitate community discussions, identify engagement opportunities, and represent Fargo’s brand to build relationships with residents, businesses, and partners. Organize community events and support organizational outreach efforts. Website Editing

– Maintain and update the City’s website, evaluate content for usability, and ensure consistency with communication standards. Use analytics to improve web performance. Crowdsourcing

– Engage in active listening across platforms, monitor community discourse, and recommend new engagement tools and technologies. Humanizing

– Translate technical information into relatable content, develop visual graphics, and foster relationships with staff to highlight their work and promote the department’s mission. Communicating

– Maintain professional relationships, facilitate information exchange, and promote public relations campaigns. Establish effective communication with diverse audiences. Prioritizing Safety

– Follow safety guidelines, wear protective equipment as needed, and report unsafe conditions. Adapting

– Perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, public administration, or a related field, with at least two years of professional experience or internships, or equivalent education and experience. A valid driver’s license is also required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Deep knowledge of major social media platforms and trends. Creativity and ability to build and convert digital audiences. Excellent written communication skills. Experience in visual graphics, photography, and digital media. Strong interpersonal and project management skills. Ability to analyze data and optimize engagement strategies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, CMS, and AP writing styles. Knowledge of legal requirements related to information dissemination. Work is primarily in a standard office environment with occasional travel and on-call hours. Physical activities include sitting, standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
