Shipping & Receiving Associate – Chautauqua Bookstore (Seasonal Employment)
The Chautauqua Bookstore is located on Bestor Plaza and is open all year round. The bookstore carries a wide selection of new books, Chautauqua themed clothing and souvenirs, stationery, posters, educational toys for children, locally produced products and international Fair Trade items. During the summer season the bookstore is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
About Your Compensation Compensation for this position starts at $16.00/Hr and, with demonstrated experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $17.00/Hr.
About Your Work Day
Reporting on a timely basis, typically at 8:30 am Mon‑Fri.
Helping to bring in packages being delivered to the bookstore; this may involve carrying packages as heavy as 50 lb down a short flight of stairs.
Opening packages, checking for damages, verifying that contents match what is on packing slips or invoices.
Entering information from the invoice into the store’s inventory system with precision, accuracy and time efficiency.
Disposing of shipping materials after use, typically bundling cardboard to be recycled.
Cleaning up the workstation at the end of the day; organizing paperwork, desk supplies and tools; sweeping back‑room area and disposing of trash.
About The Referral Program Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program offers a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees who refer a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90 days after the first physical date of work. For seasonal positions working less than 6 months, the new hire must remain employed for at least 30 days. The season closes on the last Sunday in August.
About Your Schedule Seasonal employment may start annually each June and conclude in August, with possible pre‑season and post‑season openings based on business needs. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends and holidays. The position generally requires a four‑ or eight‑hour shift, with a start time between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., totaling 30–40 hours per week. One weekend shift each week is required. Part‑time work is available pre‑/post‑season.
