Description Do you enjoy working outdoors? Are you skilled in grounds or landscaping maintenance? Do you have a passion for well‑kept grounds and gardens?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

We are seeking a dependable grounds keeper to help us maintain a level of aesthetic excellence at APL. You will be joining a hard‑working team of grounds maintenance specialists that provide a full range of services including lawn mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding; clearing debris from grounds, storage and parking areas; and performing snow removal, ditching, and earth movement tasks.

Responsibilities

Assist with beautification of property for the premier research and development center of Howard County

Trim, edge, and mow lawn areas using commercial walk‑behind and riding mowers and other gasoline‑powered equipment

Mulch and weed planting bed areas, prune/trim trees, plants, and shrubs, reporting evidence of disease or pests

Rake leaves, collect trash, and perform other grounds maintenance clean‑up duties as needed

Maintain assigned tools and equipment in clean and good working order

Assist the Snow Crew during inclement weather

Use personal protective equipment, work outside during inclement weather conditions, climb ladders, work at heights, lift and carry 50 lbs, and use APL vehicles in the course of daily operations

Qualifications Minimum qualifications:

Have a high school diploma or equivalent with math and language skills comparable to a high school graduate

Have knowledge and skill to operate hand and power tools to maintain turf, paved, and landscaped areas of commercial or residential properties

Be capable of operating commercial mowing equipment, including walk‑behind (48", 52", 60") and other grounds equipment such as gas‑powered weed eaters, edgers, back‑pack blowers, hand tools, tractors, and snow removal equipment

Possess effective communication skills and the ability to apply knowledge of rules, regulations, and guidelines of applicable codes

Have a valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license in good standing

Have the ability to obtain or possess a valid DOT medical card

Be willing and able to work a 6:00 am to 2:30 pm shift Monday through Friday and work overtime when required; shift assignment may occasionally change to meet business needs

Have the ability to climb ladders, work at heights, lift and carry 50 lbs

Hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status as required to access APL’s facilities and networks, subject to applicable laws

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:

Have experience with erosion control, grading, and seeding

Have experience tree pruning with an understanding of disease and pest evidence

Have snow removal experience

Have basic computer skills

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign‑on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term disability, long‑term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Minimum Rate $17.35 Hourly

Maximum Rate $33.40 Hourly
